I may go just to laugh at what passes as "training" now a days! But, I have "retired" military ID so can pretty much come and go anywho

I wish the tour was at a time when I could go. I want to see if the wood barracks are still there. Remember "fire watch"?

The wood barracks are gone and even most of old module style buildings are or have already been replaced by huge new dormitories. You probably wouldn't recognize the place if you haven't been out here the last few years.

              Terry,

I remember all too well "fire watch". We also had to patrol the outside for three hour shifts, can't recall what it was called. All I ever encountered was a skunk or two during my shift. Ah the wood barracks, open bay, double and single alternating bunks, hospital corners, it is all coming back to me. I spent Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years at Lackland. Seems like yesterday.

I know the military has little to no sense of history, so I am not surprised. I recently revisited one of the other bases I was posted to and was surprised at the changes there. I haven't been to Lackland in more than half a century, so I am sure I wouldn't recognize any of it.

Was told by a USAF retiree that when Kelly was closed, they just moved the fence and incorporated a lot of Kelly into Lackland.

Are you guys talking about guarding in the "Casual Barracks"? Remember that well, but that was on the inside with the Casual Guys and a night stick!
That was way before the "Don't Ask Con't Tell" policy!

When I was there we did not have "fire watch". I remember the old wood barracks. I was in the newer barracks at that time. On night guard duty I had to check each electrical outlet by putting my hand over them to make sure it was not overheating. There was nothing plugged into them!

It would be interesting to go back.

yepper, remember standing "fire watch" and catching one of our finest attempting to go AWOL! It was 3rd week of basic in November 1969 and he had decided to go out one of the windows and got hung up. Remember the DI just beating the living chit out of him.

Maybe it was the time of year, I was there in May 1960. We had fire watch because the heat was on in those old wooden barracks and if there was a heating malfunction someone needed to sound the alarm to get everyone out before those tinder boxes went up in flames. I believe it was not just a training exercise (E.I.: "Halt who goes there?"), but it was born from sad experience. Perhaps not a Lackland or even in the Air Force. Those wooden barracks were common in all branches of the military. Can you imagine the carnage with all those sleeping bodies and a fire.

Edit add: I must have just missed you Rick.

I did my basic at Lackland beginning in June 1968. Don't remember "fire watch" but certainly remember the temperature feeling like fire. Wooden barracks...that's all I knew my entire 4 year active term. 18 months at Forbes AFB in Topeka, Ks and 30 months at Hickam AFB in beautiful Hawaii.
