Where to apply adhesive for door weatherstripping? 1970 coupe (photo)

Which surface(s) of the door panel should weatherstripping adhesive be applied?

The photo below is the RH door jamb of my 1970 coupe. You can see the residue on the surface where I applied the adhesive during my first attempt at installing new weatherstripping. But when installed, the rear edge of the door sticks out almost 1/4" from the quarter. I removed the new weatherstripping from the rear of the door (leaving the remainder attached), and the door closes fine.

So I'm wondering if the problem is I stuck the weatherstripping to the wrong surface of the jamb.

Any advice about this?

I want to determine if the weatherstripping was glued down improperly, or if the reproduction rubber just doesn't fit.

I looked at the doors on my original-paint 70 that I bought from the original owner. The adhesive was applied where you applied it, and more into the V of that area. Make sure that the inverted V portion of the weatherstrip fits into that V. By the way, it looks like you are using yellow weatherstrip cement from a tube. Using Weldwood contact cement by Dap or something similar is far easier to use, and has a more authentic color and look.

Thanks Gary. I see adhesive on your door on the same surface area I applied adhesive.

i will reattach the weather stripping again, this time making sure it's positioned tightly along the corner of the channel. I hope it goes better this time.

I had same problem first time around. Second time I used a small paint brush to spread
the adhesive over the area of the door and used the brush to lightly coat the back of the weatherstrip.
If you give the coated surfaces a few seconds to flash off the solvent from the adhesive before you
put the pieces together, the bond will hold better. I then used masking tape to firmly hold the strip
down to the door and let set overnight. Never had another problem.

This thread confirmed that I applied the adhesive in the proper area. I'll take Mike Ernst's advise and reinstall with particular attention to placing the rubber in the "V" of the door's jamb. I hope that makes a difference.

New weather strips always cause tightness/fitment issues. Install the new weather strips, close the door, and let it sit for several days. As the weather strips compress/conform, the door will eventually operate as normal (this assumes the door is not way out of adjustment).

I did find a difference in weatherstrip size when I did my 58. The first set I got was giving me door closing issues so I bought a second set from Doc. Big difference - no door closing issues with the second set.

If you get NOS they fit perfect.

next best is CRC (corvette rubber corp) - they work very nicely and do not cost a mint.
fairly soft and pliable and not to "fat"


Do Not use SoftSeal WS - will never fit right and they are hard as hell.

I removed the prior repro weatherstripping and installed Corvette Rubber Company's product. The results are not much better; see photos. The door shut fine with the old weatherstripping. And with no weatherstripping, it shuts and aligns fine but has some "slop" when closed. I have the door striker adjusted all the way in for the tightest fit.

I left a voice mail with CRC for their advice; I'll keep you posted with what they say.

Any suggestions?
