Question on 69 350/350 Q-jet carb choke linkage

    Guys,

I'm installing my carb and wanted to ask if anyone knows if the choke rod attaches to the carb without any kind of clip of some kind to help keep it in place. I do not see one in my AIM and can't find one from the vendors but not sure if I'm missing something. Also was wondering if the choke spring has to be "wound" at least a little prior to install. If I wind it a little it can generate a little downward pull on the rod to keep the choke engaged. Presumably, once the engine is hot the spring weakens and allows the choke to open. If I install the choke straight up without winding there is no downward pressure so not sure it can work that way. Thanks.

    Mike,
Check page 208 (UPC 6, sheet C1) of the '69 AIM. View A shows the clip that holds the choke rod to the carb. The spring does not need to be wound up, just pulled up enough for the rod to go in. This clip is most likely available from any of the usual vendors. Paragon lists it as part #4700 Choke rod kit. Most likely includes the rod and clip as the illustrated part #1838K for 70 LT1.

      Mike,
Some vendors list it as the Back Up Light Switch & Choke Rod Clip. Corvette Central has it for $2.99. Their part number is #353098.

        Jimmy,

I'm familiar with that clip. I have two choke rods for this car. One I got from a vendor the other I believe is original from the car. The rod from the vendor has the clip on it. It works because there is an edge cut into the rod that allows the clip to be attached securely. The original rod does not have this notch in it. This means the clip cannot be applied. The new rod is much shorter than the original rod. The original rod appears to function perfectly, except for the clip, and I do not believe the new rod will work since it is much shorter than the original, although I haven't actually tried it. One thought was to get out my Dremel and cut the notch in the longer rod in order to apply the clip but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something before I did that.

This is the clip you need. I bought this one from Dr. Rebuild. If your choke rod is too log get the correct one. They are available. I think you should use the rod for a 300 HP. If you order the rod for 350 SHP you will get the rod for the Holley on the LT1.

            Larry- That's a beautiful, original looking Q-Jet.

Michael- Note the two differently designed clips. The one on Larry's car does not require a groove near the end of the rod. The question is which is typical for your car?

              Michael,
Are you using the Choke Adjustment instructions from the 69 or 70 Shop manual ? Disconnect the rod from the choke lever. While holding the choke plate closed, push down on the choke rod to contact the stop on the spring. The top surface of the rod should be even with the bottom of the hole in the choke lever. If not you bend the rod to adjust it.
Just as there is confusion on the 69 350 L46 choke rod and clip, there is confusion on the correct spring. In the engine fuel section of the shop manual all the different springs are illustrated. You want the one illustrated for "All 350 & 327 CU. IN. Engines with 4 BBL. Carburetor. Make sure your spring moves in the correct direction and has the stop in the correct location as illustrated.

That is an NOS 7029207 AC Delco service replacement I bought about 7 years ago before the prices got crazy. The correctly dated 7029207 DA went on the shelf. I have to say it is much better than any rebuilt carb I have used. I checked all the adjustments when I put it on and they were all near perfect. Even the idle mixture wound up within a quarter turn of the out of the box setting.

Michael. The clip Lawrence is showing you is the correct clip for a Rochester. The clip Jimmy is showing is correct for a Holley. That's the way it is.

This clip was NOT used on a 1969. The correct clip is the one shown in Lawrence's post, above.

                      Hi Joe,
Yes, I see that now! You are correct , as always. It seems that the clip I show started being used in '70. It's the one I have on my '73 Q-Jet.
                      Thanks,
