I have an original canister but can't get a decal to look good on it and I've been unable to find anyone with a silk screen so I thought I would just buy a reproduction. From what I've seen they are slightly different than the original but very close. So how much of a points deduction would I get for the reproduction?
For a 1961 what is the current deduction for a reproduction oil filter canister

John:
There are a few folks that still restore these older oil cans: Ken Hansen and Richard Fortier are two names. Cost is approx same as a repro canister. The repro canister is thinner metal than original, but otherwise looks identical. I would suspect no deduct or perhaps a 1 point deduct for the repro..........possibly due to the bolt headmark.
I prefer the thicker metal of the original.......especially for the o-ring (square ring) main sealing surface.
FWIW.

I bought a restored original from Paragon. I tried to reach Ken Hansen to have one of mine done but never got a response. Paragon also advertises that they do the restoration, but as I recall it was just a little more to just buy a restored one from them.Don Harris

That's an interesting thought. PM me when you're back.
Mine has the correct bolt so that helps. I hadn't noticed the no decal in the TIM&JG until recently. Maybe I could also make my own silk screen.- Top

Judging got me on the decal for a point...the bolt headmark (an "M" IIRC) was fine...
You can fiddle around with the decal to make it more like silk screen (e.g. trim the clear edge back to the white rectangular border and clear coat the canister) but it still prob won't pass with no deducts..- Top
