1973 Drivers Side Mirror Well Nut?

The backing metal behind the door skin appears to be wallowed out and will not hold either screws.

Has anyone enlarged the mounting holes and used a well nut as is used on passenger side dealer installed mirrors.

If so, has it been a satisfactory solution.

    Is there a better solution?

    Thank you

    Roger,
One thing I can tell you is that I have a passenger side mirror mounted on my car with well nuts as was the dealer practice, and it is not satisfactory. The mirror is not nearly as stable as on the drivers side, which has the inside mounting plate. I don't think you'll be happy with the well nut solution on the driver's side, unless somehow the plate gives the well nuts a more secure attachment than when they are set only in the fiberglass door skin alone.

      Roger,

I recently removed my 73 drivers side door skin. Attached are 2 pictures (1 of the outside of the mirror reinforcement and one of the inside). I would recommend re-tapping the reinforcement bracket nuts. Should be a very simple fix...

      Regards,

        Thank you John,

After further investigation, my drivers door which also has been re-skinned, is completely missing the internal nut bracket.

I have not figured out a way to replace the bracket with something to serve as a backer.

May still have to use well nuts unless someone has a better way.

          Roger,

If the door skin is not off the car, I can't think of another way to mount the mirror other than using well nuts because of the lack of access. Its unfortunate that the assembly was not properly installed/completed
