    My intent is not to argue with you. I'm trying to point out that Rich Thomas and you are talking apples and oranges. What you can buy for $200, even if you add the things you mention, will not steer a car. There is no steering box. Rich is talking about a column with box.
    To remove the tube and shaft from your 57 steering box could easily damage the box. You bolt in a 58-62 column with box which is 2" shorter, and you keep your 57 column and box intact and undamaged.

      What is the problem with the box? Aren't they the same 57 to 58? What is the risk of damaging the box?

          A little off topic but there is an April 1957 car a few miles from me in N. Calif. This car was originally blk/blk, FI, has had 3 owners and has always been in the same city. The present owner thinks a previous owner had the column shortened 2". The car now has an early 327 and a T-10 4sp. This car was used for 1/4 mile racing. The '57 has radio/heater and both tops, so I assume it was not originally built to race, but I will give the owner a copy of this discussion and he can look for the numbers on the steering box.
