Alternator Rotation 64 C2

I'm guessing my altenator back half is 90 degrees out of rotation. The R-F terminal is on top and I think it should be to the passenger side. Is that correct? I've looked at posts but don't see a clear answer. I do have pics of two very original cars which give me my assumption of correctness. This is an early 64 C2.

If I made this change then I'd pick up some slack in my wiring harness which I need to get the wires further away from the hood latch.

If needed, can't I just do this myself...just remove the four case bolts, rotate it and re secure...no wiring inside to damage by rotation....is that right?

You are correct that your alternator is 90 deg off. I think you would be better off removing the alternator from the car, dong the rotation on the bench and reinstalling... If memory serves, there are no wires going to the front half of the alternator so you should be ok.

Your correct you can rotate it but better to do it on the bench

Yup. It's as simple as that. No need to remove it from the car.

Larry,
How early is early? If at very start of production it could have still been a 63 unit with different clocking (check part number)
however I would expect only the first 100 units.

My serial is 5800...my two reference car pics are about 2800 and 5700 so I have a 64 unit...I've looked at diodes before and think they are right which raises the question of how it got out of position to begin with. But I'm going to change it.

You will need to separate the cases just enough to allow the cast lugs to clear the cast ears the screws go into. Also separate the cases so the windings stay with the rear case as you rotate 90 degrees. The brushes need to not come off the comutator or you will be taking the back off to set brushes and springs.

So it sounds like it is best to take it off the car, remove the screws, rest it on the back and lift the front up enought to clear and, if so, I assume there is enough clearance behind the pulley to do this...or does the pulley need to come off?
