Has front wheel bearing procedure changed ...

during the last who knows how many years (50+)? I ask because I am reading my reprint and it states the usual 12 ft-lbs, back off one flat and insert cotter pin, giving a .001-.008" end movement. If necessary back off another half flat. Then, I was searching other Corvette sites and slightly different techniques or procedures came up which reduces the end play. One I recall was (paraphrasing) while spinning the wheel torque to 12 ft-lbs, back off to loose, then tighten to something like 60 in-lbs. Another said to tighten to 15 ft-lbs, back off the usual flat.

So, I just installed new Timken bearings, inner and outer, on the front and followed the 68-82 GM shop guide (reprint) and don't want to screw this up if the procedure has evolved over the years. Right now, it's at 12 backed off 1 flat and new cotter pin installed.

    Thanks as usual,

    Gary
