Fred, Easiest removal method I use is to use a sharp chisel at the small swedged end and just cut inward until free.

To replace, I use a hydraulic press and a few differently sized 1/2" drive impact sockets. They have a bevel on the socket end and a nice flat on the drive end. Start small then work your way larger until you can get the ring to splay out, then finish off with a flat bar.

These retainers appear to be zinc plated. Originals were bare steel.

Six good swings with a dull screwdriver in the right spots & she popped off. Virtually NO RUST. Sandblasted this in my cabinet & cleaned remainder on my wire wheel. I got lucky this time !---I guess being a Reno Nevada car originally helps--SWEET !!

Joe, Yes, I "Upgraded". I decided on the rust free type for that car as it's a nice driver. Actually, it top flighted last year so even with lots of little "upgrades" and "atypical" little tidbits, it did okay.

Yes, I could have spritzed up the bare steel type with some matte-clear paint, but went with the plated version instead, even though the configuration profile is slightly different as well.

          I like longevity.
