NCRS 2nd Edition 1973-74 Tech Manual, 454 Emblems

Page 51, 454 Emblems: States emblems are held in place by stamped nuts. Are stamped nuts barrel clips? I was told in a prior post that emblems are held in place by sensitive adhesive double backed tape. I have also been told barrel clips were not used in 1973. Can anyone in NCRS judging tell me what a stamped nut is? It does not appear to me that my 73 454 had any inserted nuts in the 3 mounting holes on each side.

    George,

I am not a judge, but I may be able to help shed some light on this topic. The emblems do have a self adhesive backing that hold them to the hood. There are also metal inserts in the holes that help hold the emblem studs. These are not clips or nuts, but are "C" shaped inserts that simply act as a pressure point for the studs. Attached is a picture of my bare 73 454 hood in which you can see one of the metal inserts remaining. They often rot or fall out after someone removes the emblems. I have not seen them for sale. I hope this helps.

    Best,
    John

Thanks John, I appreciate the feedback. I see the "C" shaped insert you are referring to.

I've taken a very close look at the holes drilled out on each side of my 73 hood. The car has never been painted. There are no remaining stamped nuts or "C" shaped inserts in any of the six holes. The mounting holes are about 1/8" and look to be nothing more than drilled out fiberglass. I auction purchased on Ebay what was advertised as 454 GM emblems in the original boxes. On the back side of each emblem is a green colored hard plastic backing in the same shape as the 454 emblem. The backing is about 1/16" thick and there is no pull tap to remove it, assuming you did that. The backing appears permanetly glued to the metal. The parts may not be original, but, I know the car is, I've owned it for the past 37 years.

There may not be a pull tab on the "protective film" covering the pressure sensitive adhesive strip. However, there should be a very thin "protective film" there nonetheless. You may need to use a fingernail or a sharp knife to separate it at one spot to use as a "fingerhold" to remove it. Once removed, this will expose the adhesive strip. Use the pins on the back of the emblem to guide it into the exact correct position and press it firmly into place, applying light pressure to the entire face of the emblem.

By the way, your front fender "Stingray" side emblems are designed to be located and affixed in the exact same way. No nuts were originally used on the rear of the pins here, either. However, after the emblems are removed, folks often use such nuts to REATTACH the emblems because the adhesive is a one-time-only kind of thing.

That makes good sense. I'll use your advise and let you know how it works out.
