    '62 leaking master cylinder

Original master cylinder on my 62 has a slow leak at back where brake rod enters cylinder. Is there a kit that will fix problem by just replacing a seal or is there more to it like having to hone cylinder bore? Would like to keep original cylinder if feasible. As alternative to repairing, any vender sell correct repo or overhauled master cylinders with correct wording and numbers ?
    Thanks

    William,

You can send it to Lonestar Caliper and they will repair it for you. 1 903 829-8400

If the cylinder bore is damaged in any way, I do not recommend honing. If the bore is damaged, you need to have the bore sleeved or obtain a new master cylinder. If the bore is PERFECT, a new kit will solve the problem.

either Lone Star or White Post Restoration are the 2 reliable vendors. I've had one from each, no complaint. If you have the correct original cylinder cap, do not sent it with your core. The re-pop caps are wrong.

Lonestar get $282 to rebuild my original. Very pricy. Corvette Central sells a complete reproduction master cylinder said to be correct(I's use my original cap) for $169. Would seem to be the way to go if it is like original. Anyone bought one? Anybody know who makes these for CC?
          Thanks

Don't skimp on originality or safety. Have your original re-sleeved/rebuilt, flush the rest of the system and go with DOT-5, and you will never have to mess with it again.

              Re: '62 leaking master cylinder

The only one I know who is reproducing the DELCO master cylinders is CSSB Inc in Florida. There could be others, but they are the source for C2 and C3 reproductions.

Be aware (FWIW) that some/many the rebuilders are now saying that the warranty is void if DOT 5 is used. I have a CSSB restored and rebuilt master cylinder on my 1967 and have used DOT 5 for over 20 years without an issue. Now, many say it is a big problem. Obviously something has changed.

White Post Restoration re-sleeved and rebuilt the master cylinder in my 62 20 years ago and it is still perfect after many miles.

Just be aware that the repos are made overseas, I just went through this process and decided on having my original rebuilt by White Star, $$208 after all was done, that's cost plus shipping both ways!

I'm not surprised, at all, that the reproductions are off-shore manufactured. These days, a LOT of cast iron parts are cast in China, especially those for low volume applications. These days, C1 master cylinders are probably about as low volume as a cast part could be. This does not necessarily make them bad, though. A lot of castings on new cars are made in China, too. However, a reproduction C1 master cylinder is very unlikely to be manufactured at a Tier 1 OEM supplier factory in China.

Good decision, you will be happy.

                        Terry,
Yes, Whitestar is more reasonable. But have you or anyone else looked at or installed the one sold (manufactured by??)by Corvette Stainless Steel Brakes? It is said to be "correct."CSSB other products- calipers, etc. are good quality. This is the one Corvette Central sells.

White Post Restoration re-sleeved and rebuilt mine in 1996 and it continues to function flawlessly.
