    Timing Tab for Crate Engine

When I purchased my chevy 350/290 hp crate engine (GM # 12499529), it had two timing tabs in the parts bag. I am trying to figure out which one is correct for my engine. When I contacted Summit, they said "which ever one fits best." I actually can't figure out where either one would attach on the front of the engine (holes don't align with timing cover bolts, etc.). Any help in remedying my ignorance would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Rob

One is for a 6" balancer and one is for an 8" balancer. So, which one you use depends upon which balancer you use. Either tab will mount to the engine using 2 existing timing cover bolts.

If you post photos of the two tabs, I can tell you which one is for the 6" balancer and which is for the 8" balancer.

      Hi Joe,

Thanks for the help. Here is a picture of the two different tabs. Also, do you know why they included the two dowel pins?

      Thanks,

The one on the right is for 6"-7" balancers and the one on the left is for 8" balancers.

I don't know what the dowel pins are for. Isn't that covered in the crate engine instructions?

Thanks Joe! By the way, the dowel pins are not mentioned in the crate engine instructions.

They're probably camshaft dowel pins #12554553 for indexing.

It's hard to tell the size from the picture but could one dowel be for the crankshaft, for manual shift flywheel indexing?

                Robert,

Your crate engine is configured for both driver side and passenger side oil dipstick (holes in block). I believe the dowel pins are to block the unused side for the oil dipstick assembly.

We're narrowing it down. The dowels are for... Cam indexing, ...or flywheel indexing, ...or plugging the dipstick hole.

                  we should have a raffle.

If you look about 2/3 down the page of the link below, their description states the block is drilled for either side oil dip sticks and pins are included to block the opposite side.

Thanks for figuring this out for us, Dave.

Why two dowels/pins to plug one hole?

Holes on each side are slightly different sizes. (So are pins). Don't remember off-hand if driver or passenger side has larger hole.
