    66 convertible rear carpet installation

Anybody have some really detailed pictures of how the carpet in the rear section of a convertible should fit. Like immediately behind the seats where the wheel wells covers meet the front cross member piece. Also where the rear of the wheel well cover piece meets the deck lid towers. etc. etc.

Also any tips as to how and in what order to install will also be most welcomed !

I have the whole set from Knoch, it just seems short on one side , and ill fitting on the other .However having nothing to compare it to , i can't say for sure, yet!

    Thanks,

    Jim

Thanks to some great pics I found by Rich Mozzetta and Mike Ernst I have my answers on the rear area of the rear carpet.

Now , all I need are some detailed photos of both sides of the front section of the rear carpet . Preferably with the Quarter Trim Panels removed . In particular, how much carpet is on either side of the Trim Panels mounting brackets once sliced , where it ends up as it meets the division or luggage panel , how it fits under the luggage panel carpet piece ,and where . etc etc , you know , all the tiny details.

    Thanks all,

    Jim

        Hi Jim,

I never spotted your first post, but glad you found some info....

I bet you're in the dilemma of.... "it's just a little too short". The rear of the floor carpet pieces behind the seats have a flap, with a 90 beaded corner. It really needs to be about a 1" or so higher where they get screwed to the quarter panels. Originals I see are higher there, and St Louis placed a small screw to hold the flap corner to the panel. If the new carpet lap is too low, you have to drill a new hole. This leaves the old hole there and may need to be repaired/painted.

Here are photos, albeit the wrong screw. IIRC the screw is a small oval head Phillips with a small conical backup washer. I just did this on a Saddle '67 but don't have any pics.

THis side needed a new hole made. Original hole from original higher flap still present.

          Hi Rich,

I wondered where you were ! You are always good for a few pictures no matter what the subject is, and your pictures of the rear Deck Spring Tower area were most helpful !!

Thanks for these pics and the "heads up". Forewarned is forearmed !

However, I still have not gotten that far yet . I am still trying to make the right side wheel well piece fit both forward and rear as I think it should . (See Pic of area )A few detailed pics of that area, by you or someone else , would be most helpful .

          Thanks again,

          Jim

That area is infamous too. The bound edge that goes over the luggage stop piece and under the quarter panel is also about a 1" too short. Set your quarter panel in, then check if you can tuck the bound edge under it. If not, cheat the carpet piece and roll it forward as far as you can go until you can get at least a 12" under the panel. It'll take some trial and error. I found a few in-process photos of those end pieces, below. Not the best detail and didn't have the panels on. Can't find the pics with them on. I was in a hurry then and didn't take photos after completion.

You are not alone. The last one I did was tough too. I have spoken to them about this issue for years. It appears it's still a issue.

Re: 66 convertible rear carpet instal

              Rich,

Good to know ! Albeit small consolation !

I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. I was hoping you would tell me ;"just do it this way and all will be well " ! Or , other pictures would show, that the bound edge did not go under the trim panel on the passenger's side , or better yet on either side , so i just needed to trim some , but noooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say mine is more like 2 inches short in that area . So far, it seems the only way I could get any part of the bound edge under the trim panel is to re-cut the top notches, move the entire piece forward , and leave about an inch of a gap in the back. Maybe , just not having it go down as far as it should into the jack compartment , maybe ?

I will continue to try those and other methods as well.

              Thanks for all your efforts,

              Jim

                Jim,

If it's that short, it's possible it wasn't cut properly at AK. Before you cut it you may want to call them and get a spec measurement from them snd compare to yours. If it's wrong, they need to get you a correct piece, or both.

The last one I did was very tight there. What I ended up doing was stitching in a bulk"piece of heavy duty fabric at the end of the binding. What this piece did was act as a thick tab to hold the end of the binding under and inside the panel. It prevented it from slipping out. I did this on both sides. I wish I snapped some photos of that but I was scrambling to get it corrected.
