    GF-90 Fuel Filter Breakdown

    Hello,

If this fuel filter is contaminated, would it leak with a brown ooze of some sort? My 63 fuelie started this yesterday after running it for about 10 minutes. It looks like oil and has a gas smell.

    Thoughts????

Jerry, have you looked in the tank? Whats in the fuel filter came from the tank and lines. filter is just paper, and the steel can.

Last summer I looked at a 64 for someone, and this car had been sitting somewhere for many years as the tank was full of rust, the Dealer selling the corvette made a half hearted attempt to clean it out, just to get the car running for a buyer.

        Ed,

Tank is very clean with brand new fuel. I just can't see the source of the ooze. Not from under the intake or the valve covers. It looks like it is coming from under the filter......

The fuel pump diaphragm may be split and sucking oil in, or the hoses are breaking down internally.

...or are you seeing remnants of oil from the oil filler area drpping down the filter.

Jerry, When the intake was installed, did the intake bolts get sealed. I have seen oil creep up through the bolts and rest in the pockets of the intake under the fuel filter and the opposite side of the intake also. Just another theory. Try to clean it up, run the car again and see if it is dripping onto the intake or it is growing from below.

                  Joe,

Let me check with Ron on the intake bolts as he installed the unit. However, I didn't see any oil on the intake. Maybe I'm just not looking close enough. I will run the car again over the weekend or so.

                  Thanks,

                  Jerry

Did someone put a sealer on the gas line threads?

Permatex gasket sealant #2 is crappy brown color. If they sealed the treads with that and didn't fully tighten the seal this could be breaking down by the fuel and oozing out.

I have a 65 fuelie and found brown thickish fluid below the fuel filter/fuel meter area. I determined the source was from a leaking hi pressure fuel pump drive shaft seal. A small amount of fuel was mixing with the grease in the fuel meter cable housing, and dripping down in the fuel filter/fuel meter area. I replaced the shaft and seal to resolve the issue.

The first thing I thought after I read this Robert is....

Bingo! Sounds exactly like Jerry's issue. Great idea!
