Late 1972 seat belt warning buzzer problem

Our 1972 is January-built with the 'late' seat belt warning system, and it's developed a problem. The car has a manual transmission.

In normal operation, if the ignition was on and the driver's side seat belt was fully retracted, and the emergency brake lever was all the way down, the seat belt warning buzzer would sound. When the brake lever was pulled up enough to cause the center gauge cluster brake warning light to light up, the seat belt buzzer would turn off.

The problem now is that the set belt warning buzzer will stay on regardless of the e-brake lever position (even though the brake warning light is on). The seat belt warning buzzer will stop when the seat belt is extended.

I've looked through the archives with no luck. Can any of you give me suggestions as to a repair?

    Thanks,
    Larry

I have little experience with this system. However, it might be a problem with the relay which is part of this system. It was GM #3961573 and is located under the forward console.

Joe, thanks; I'll look into that.

Russ, the owner's manual states that "on manual transmission cars, the [warning buzzer] reminders are designed to come on with the transmission in any gear position, except that they do not come on when the parking brake is engaged". The circuit logic identifies the parking brake as engaged by the under-console switch which activates the brake warning light when the brake lever is pulled. And I miss-spoke earlier - the brake warning light is on the tachometer, not on the center gauge cluster. I was thinking of the placement of the seat belt warning light.
