1966 Alan Green L88 Coupe Racer

Anyone remember this car? I'm looking for more racing history before starting the restoration.
Campaigned by Alan GreenChevrolet during the 1966 season.
    Driver: Gary Gove
    Crew Chief: Bud Weiser
    Mechanic: Larry Webb

This car started life as an offthe lot 427/425hp coupe. Alan Green was planning on having Gary Gove drive anopen wheel car for the 66 season. When Alan Green suddenly sold the open wheelcar to a good customer they scrambled to prep this 66 Coupe for Gary Gove todrive. When Zora heard that Alan Green, who had received factory supportin the past, was campaigning a 66 Corvette he sent over a group of parts. In this package was a 66 Heavy Duty 427 (L88), M22 transmission, Headers andside pipes, and a 36gal tank. These parts were prepped and installed forracing starting the beginning of May 1966.

I have found racing results forRiverside and Westwood. I am still researching for more results. I have photosof the car with 5 different numbers and 3 different body configurations sothere is more info out there somewhere.

Also looking for any 1966 L88 engine assembly info.

Joe, I don't know anything beyond this, but I would be very interested to see any pictures and progress reports on the restoration. This must be a huge challenge, and no one better than you to get it done. Good luck!

So you bought that from Bob. Quite a history. I remember when Dale Samuelson owned it, we raced against him many time in the 70's at Westwood, Kent and Portland. That will be a great restoration.

Joe you may be aware of Kevin Mackay and his 66 Penske L88, but if not , he specializes in these cars. I've seen him with this car at many type events and doubt there is anyone who knows more about L88 cars than he. He's always in the driveline under corvette repair inc. Sounds like a rare restoration opportunity. Wish you much luck and enjoyment with this.

The only picture I have of that car that I can find right now is as it ran at Riverside 1966, #64. Its in the book "Corvette racing legends" by Dr. Peter J. Gimenez, page 135. If you don't have the book, get it. Its full of great pics and info.
I'll keep looking through my files and books.

Yes, We made a deal with Bob and I want to gather a bit more info before jumping into the restoration. I should be making a trip out your way soon to meet with the old timers who raced it.

Thanks Ed! Yes, I have the book. I also have a copy of a Riverside photo in the #64 trim. The L88 was in the car by that race. It finished 7th there. A pretty good finish for a National event. I have photos of it wearing the #64, #7, #77, #771 and #11. I'm sure there may be more but finding old racing photos and information is not an easy task.

You will enjoy meeting Larry, he's a good guy. He still has people lined up to tune their FI and Big Block cars.
The Alan Green race shop was in my building where my old body shop is. They were gone for a while before I moved in. And no, they didn't leave any L88's lying around in the corner when they left.

Very cool info! Hopefully Larry and Gary can fill in some missing info and help with the timeline of events.
