C2 Fire Extinguisher - Cockpit Mount

Guys: Where is the best place to mount a fire extinguisher in a C2 cockpit? Mine is currently loose in the back and not safe in the event of a stop. I've seen them mounted under the glove compartment. Any views appreciated. Best, Ned

Put a couple of 1"-2" bands of Velcro around the bottle and wedge it between the rear floor (jack board) and the luggage stop behind the passenger seat. The carpeting will "grab" the Velcro and it won't budge. Mine's been there for three years and not moved and I drive mine about 5k miles per year.

There are brackets that mount between the front passenger seat mount and the floor, the extinguisher mounts in front of the passenger seat. I have them in 2 cars, they work well. Many of the Corvette suppliers sell them.

Stewart: Thanks man. I just took a look and there are a ton of them out there. If it's not too much trouble, would you mind recommending a brand?

its been 7 or 8 years since I bought them, one for a C5 and one for a 65. I looked a couple of months ago because I need another one and couldn't find the brand. I bought them from a vendor at the Puyallup Wa swap meet, he made them, but he wasn't there this year.

              Ed,
Let me give a more detailed explanation as to why I did what I did. There are no brackets, therefore no drilling. I, also, didn't put it in front of the passenger seat because that would, obviously, impede the movement of the seat (fore & aft). It's equally accessible from either location. Just MHO.

Leif is correct, it does restrict the seat movement, but mine stays back all the time. We have 25k miles at least in the C5, many long trips, and never a problem. It mounts via the front seat bolts so there are no extra holes. No matter what you do there will be some give and take.

Leif, I like the idea of no mounting hardware, but how secure is it? For example, can Velcro keep the extinguisher in place during a major collision?

I seriously doubt it, Mark. Crammed behind the luggage stop, as I have it, it's not going anywhere during normal operation. I'm not so sure what would stay secure in a major collision in one of these 50 year old cars...including myself

On wife's '63 coupe, I had a Halon in the exact location Leif explained. Easy access if ever needed. I didn't use Velcro but that's a great idea. I'd do that if I had a C2 again.

I had a mini-Halon in my '59 in the glove box between the seats, and a Halon under the drivers seat in the wife's E-Type as it has a built in floor stop, reachable from the rear.

Only once did I need a FE. My '59 almost burned up due to a carburetor/operator error. Easy access to the Halon between the seats was key.

I've had two bands of 1" Velcro around my fire extinguisher for a long time. It sits against the back of the passenger-side luggage stop and the Velcro holds it to both the floor carpet and the luggage stop carpet. Its very secure, but can be easily reached from the drivers seat. It might come out in a roll-over, but that's about it.
