    1966 Starter paint??

I have understood that the end plate on starters was not painted, and the main body should be semi gloss black. The JG does not specify what the end plate finish should be. What is correct?

Bob, if there was no paint the natural finish just plain old metal. does the JM say it may be natural? most of the time I see starters painted as a assy. other than the nose( bare aluminum). but have seen plain end plates, but are rare.

Ed, the judging manual does not specify the finish on the end plate, but I'm pretty sure that it was as you said, just plain metal. It does specify that the housing is painted semi gloss black. The problem is that last time it was judged, I took a deduction because the end plate is not painted. I'm just trying to find out which is correct.

I think for judging the starter- black is the way to go. unless your dealing with a unrestored car, I myself have seen only a few unpainted starter end plates over the years.

Every NOS starter that I've seen had a painted end frame ("end plate"). Also, the original starter on my 1969 had a painted end frame. It's possible that some starters, primarily in the C1 era, had unpainted end-frames but I don't think that C2-C3 did.

Also, one other thing to keep in mind: the starter rear bushing was serviced only as an assembly with the end frame. SERVICE end frames were un-painted, bare steel. So, it's possible that some of the un-painted end frames seen on starters got that way when the end frame was replaced.
