    69 L46 valve cover emblem won't stick

was preparing my restored aluminum valve covers for installation. ordered the metal cross flags emblem from paragon and went to put it on. The (peel back style) adhesive will not stick on the cover. I cleaned the cover with degreaser before applying. had clamping ready to hold it on, but the darn thing just slid off like there was no adhesive at all. it was sticky to touch.

Any suggestions of alternate glue to use? perhaps some dabs of weather strip adhesive or RTV gasket cement?

    Thanks,

    Rich

This emblem is still available from GM under the original part number of GM #3946860. However, in all liklihood, that's the part that Paragon supplies.

I used a small amount of super glue several years ago. Still in place.

paragon told me to first try acetone to reactivate the glue. no luck. Then they said to try lacquer thinner. still no luck. It is represented as NOS so the glue it probably no good. I will try the super glue.

I don't know that super glue is the best option if you ever want to remove them for some reason you will regret that decision. I would use a little contact adhesive it can removed later with mineral spirits.

I think that what probably happened is that these emblems are from very old GM inventory. Over time, the adhesive degrades. The thing that's strange, though, is that I've never seen one that was factory installed come loose. Some of these are almost 50 years old now. However, I don't expect that the factory-installed emblems were any different than the SERVICE emblems as far as adhesive goes.

After a couple and back and forth calls with Paragon, they are sending me another one. I fiddled with the NOS emblem so much that it is now a bit bent and no longer presentable. If the next one has the same issue, I will not screw with it and just glue it on. I will investigate using contact adhesive.

Joe, per your point, I had to pry what I think was the original emblem off. It wasn't easy!

Instead of prying the old emblem try using some mineral spirits around the old emblem it should loosen the adhesive so you can pull it off and after the emblem is removed the mineral spirits will remove the residue. It should not remove any paint just softens up the adhesive.
