The pic is a scan of page 62 of the Dobbins VetteVues book for mid years. All three pics show a loose fitting retaining ring as described in the middle pic caption. This is the only place I've ever seen this part referenced. Does anyone other than Dobbins believe this part was really used? .....have a part number? .....know of a source? I've asked this question before with no response but did not show the pic. As an alternative, would any FI expert...John Degregory, Jerry Bramlett, or other be willing to tell me that these were likely pre-porduction pics or similar and the part was never seen in production. I'd like to get some resolution to this even if it only opinion based.

Re: 63-65 FI Air Cleaner Ring
Hi Larry, Yes the ring was used on the assembly line cars. I call it the missing ring. But today since most of us are not using the original filters the ring is not used. Eith is the wire cone being used. We are using NAPA 6418 filter which is a Ford element from about 1995.
I have one of those rings around here someplace. John D
Franz Estericher was going to have that part reproduced years ago. He and I talked about the "missing" ring.- Top

Re: 63-65 FI Air Cleaner Ring
I'm surprised to read John's statement about the Ford element - AC was selling them under the original #(163C) for a # of years - I've still got six.
But as I type this, my memory bank is signaling that they may have been there for longer than I car to remember.......- Top

Loren, the Napa/Ford unit is for ease of use. It is a paper element that just fits snugly in the same location as the original. There is a lot of discussion of that on this board. Most say that their NOS stuff like you have is not usable due to age. They are pre-oiled and fall apart. You can also but a non oiled repro and oil them yourself if you want to stay all original. Now the ring is another story. I spoke to another big name in the FI area yesterday and he was not even aware the part existed.- Top

Re: 63-65 FI Air Cleaner Ring
Larry, your note and my memory required that I visit my stash; found them on a shelf with the yellow invoice from Lou Grubb Chevrolet; invoice markings were invisible, but the ink date stamp reads "Dec 1, 1997". I believe the price (trade discount) was around $11 each. 1 box was taken to a Swap Meet and marked $25 - I bought it home. Opened the box and they seem to be in one piece in the oil. I'll pierce the oil bag when I want to TRY to use one.- Top

Re: 63-65 FI Air Cleaner Ring
Mike....if you read above, John has one (just one), someone you likely know (I don't ) thought of reproducing the thing and M.F. Dobbins had one to take pictures of. Now I know there are errors in the Dobbins book (in fact most books) but I think he knew a lot about the subject. The part in his pictures looks die made. I'm going to try to find one. I wish had a part number.- Top
