Early vs Late 64 Coupe Door

Is the only difference between early and late 64 coupe doors the raised pad for the exterior door handle? I ask because my 66 coupe has a 64 passenger door and wonder if I need to buy a new door handle if the pad is removed. Would the latch mechanism inside the door still work if the pad were removed and I bought a handle for a 66?

Ed,

Yes you can accomplish this task BUT you will have to patch the door from the inside when the pad is ground flat. The fiberglass is indented for the 63-64E door handles on the inside.
The mechanism inside for latching and locking is he same for 63-66 BUT the 67 is different.

Ed, sometimes craigslist you can find a complete mid year door and would be a better choice, repairing a door at handle area maybe prone to cracking from the constant opening of the door, might also be a lot less labor involved. right Now is the Boston area there is a couple of adds for mid year doors, maybe your area will show something.

Thanks Edward. I have periodically checked craigslist and drive line. The car is in for paint now and I need to decide to leave it alone or remove the pad. The door fits really well now as it is.

Be sure to get a door be it St Louis or AO Smith correct for your car.

there is a big difference between the two.
other then the outside handle bump.
first when you go to put the door panel on ,there are indents around the outside perimeter for the clips.
second there are different location for door pulls will need extra metal behind so you do not pull out the fiberglass.

Great observation and going beyond-thinking outside the box!!!!!!

As I was just answering the question on the raised pads, and as usual never thinking like a "junk man"!!!!! Considering your answer I would find me a correct door and go on down the road!!!!
