72 Frame Stencil Question for Chassis Judges

I just purchased a frame stencil from Quanta and was disappointed to see that the numbers were in 3/4 inch font instead of the 1 inch font called for in the JG, as well as Joe Tripoli's Chassis Restoration Guide. However, since most of my original stencil was still visible I took several photos prior to sand blasting in order to place the new stencil in the exact location. Several photos were with a tape measure to measure the distance from the bottom of the frame to the numbers. Coincidently, these photos also show the height of the font and I was surprised to see that the numbers are clearly 3/4 inch font.

I intend to replicate the stencil as I found it. If I ever get this car judged and have a deduction for the size of the font will a photo of the original stencil be sufficient proof the stencil is correct?

I'm fairly new to NCRS and mine is the only original 72 stencil I've ever seen. Is mine an anomaly or is 3/4 inch font commonly found on 72's. I've been unable to speak with Kelly at Quanta for her opinion.

Thanks to anyone with knowledge of this.

    Mike

I think.... 70 and 71, where the stencil was along the frame rail, on the side, it was 1" tall. As they moved to behind the front tire, they changed to 3/4". It's very hard to find a stencil machine with 3/4" font though. 1" seemed to be the standard. But, when the manual was written, I was out-voted in putting that in. I have a 72 in the shop right now, it is 3/4".

I'll be someplace tomorrow where several original cars are, I'll try and measure them.

If you can find a machine with 3/4" font, let me know.

          Thanks Gary.

Quanta does the stencils in 3/4 inch.

Can you get a picture and measurement of the green car?

Yes, if it is visible. Many times the stencil is hidden by the splash shield. Then it becomes a bigger job.

As I suspected, to much is hidden by the splash panel. When I get the car out to the house, I'll pull the splash shield off and measure it. But, I suspect it's 3/4". This is a 3,000-mile 72.

You had me scratching my head there for a minute. Thanks for correcting that.
