    C2 Roadster Top Options

Some members had a discussion at our monthly Chapter dinner meeting tonight about C2 roadster tops. The question was... could a C2 roadster be ordered with only the optional C06 hard top, deleting the C05 soft top? Several members cited to C2 cars they had known that were hard top only. Others thought the soft top was standard, with or without the optional hard top.

The judging manual indicates that cars can be presented with either a folding soft top, an auxiliary hard top, or both, but under the section on the C06 hard top states that cars presented with both tops "must have the presence of the Soft Top confirmed, but it is not judged."

So, could C2 Roadsters be hard top only? All five years?

If I remember correctly the soft top was standard, the hardtop optional but could be ordered soft top delete for a credit.

I have seen indications that west coast and other fair weather areas had a lot of soft top delete cars sold there.

since I entered vette world in 1966 I have personally never seen a car on the streets without a soft top in car, and never did in calif in 60s or 80s when I lived there, but that is not saying they are not out there but I would say very few left factory that way. my 2 cents.

John, while I cannot speak for any year but 1965, I have an L78 that is hard top only. Car is late July assembly, an ordered car, delivered to Logansport, In. It is judged with top on.

          John,

In looking at the Corvette Black Book it says:

1963 of the 5739 C07 hardtops quantity included 1099 in lieu of soft tops at no extra cost.
1964 of the 7023 C07 hardtops quantity included 1220 in lieu of soft tops at no extra cost.
1965 of the 7787 C07 hardtops quantity included 1277 in lieu of soft tops at no extra cost.
1966 of the 8463 C07 hardtops quantity included 1303 in lieu of soft tops at no extra cost.
1967 of the 6880 C07 hardtops quantity included 895 in lieu of soft tops at no extra cost.

So it looks like you could get them with out the convertible tops.

          Mike

You could order either top alone, but if you wanted both then the hardtop became an option. Then starting with 1967, one could also order an optional black vinyl covering for the hardtop.

Thanks, guys. I think that pretty well clarifies it. Mike, too bad we had this discussion over one last drink after dinner last night. You were already gone. LOL

They absolutely could be ordered with hardtop only. It was the same price as soft-top only. This was not only the case for C2, but for 68-75 C3, too. In fact, I factory-ordered a 1969 convertible with hard-top only. I still have it. But, since 1986, I have a soft-top for it, too. In 1969, it saved me about $250 to order hard-top only as opposed to both tops. In 1986, it cost me a total of $2,000 to add the soft-top.

Just to add a little info (THANX to John Z)... here is a copy of a 1966 Dealer Order Form.
In addition, I increased the TOP section of the order form...
It clearly indicates the hard top could be ordered WITH or WITHOUT the soft top.
