I need to either have my original alternator rebuilt or replaces. What is preferred from a judging standpoint. If I need to replace what is the proper replacement alternator for max points? Thanks !!!!

Mark if the alternator is the original, You'll want to have it rebuilt, look for a local rebuilder in your area. sometimes you can find a independent rebuilder. try googling it.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: Correct alternator for 1978 L48 base corvette
Thanks Ed. That's kind of what I anticipated as I do have the original on the car. Also, I need to repair/replace the two prong connector (has the brown and red lead). Any thoughts on where I can get a replacement pigtail. The only one I have seen on line to date has a white and red wire. Thanks again for your help and have a great day!- Top

Mark, sometimes you can remove the wires from the plastic connector housing and replace the terminals. I can look later and see if I have something that will work. do you need both connectors?New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Be SURE that your rebuilder rebuilds YOUR alternator and not give you one that's already been rebuilt. Can he date code the diodes, as well?Leif

Re: Correct alternator for 1978 L48 base corvette
thanks Leif and Ed. I am definitely selecting a rebuilder who will rebuild and return my alternator. I have a line on one such outfit as I type. And correct, the diodes are not able to be seen.....- Top

You could rebuild it yourself. These alternators are not difficult to rebuild. Usually, all that is needed are bearings and brushes. However, you do need to test all other components as described in the factory service manual. It's very easy to do the testing. Replace any parts that don't check out.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

The other advantage of rebuilding it yourself is that you keep the alternator in your possession. For those like me that are "anal" about losing original parts, that's a BIG advantage. However, if you come to the conclusion that you don't feel qualified to do it yourself, then you have no choice but to trust in someone else.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
