    Michael------

    The "identifying" part of your question is easy; the "finding" part, definitely not so easy.

    The correct, original front shocks were GM #22064229. The correct, original rear shocks were GM #22064099. Finding these in new or NOS condition will be extremely difficult as both are long-since discontinued by GM. What's more, when they were last available, the fronts carried a GM list price of about $400/each and the rears a GM list price of about $600. So, a car set when you could still get them from GM would have cost about $2,000. What do you suppose that someone that had an NOS set of these now would want for them considering that the supply side of the equation is now just about zilch?

    A few things you could try:

    (1) Bilstein might have available replacements. If so, labels or other "badging" might be different;

    (2) I think that Bilstein might have available rebuilding service for these shocks. Contact them for more information.

    By the way, when I originally ordered my 1992 LT1, I considered ordering FX3 or Z07. However, what I foresaw as problems with the long-term availability of shock absorbers is one of the primary reasons I did not order either.

      Much cheaper to have them rebuilt than to even think about replacing them.

        i had no idea original ZR1 shocks were scarce and so costly. i've been hauling ones off a 92 ZR1 to corvettes @ carlisle for years trying to sell them for next to nothing. they were on the 92 that served as a donor for "Farm Use". mike

              Mike------

              Just to be clear here, I don't know that used examples of the FX3 shocks are highly scarce and valuable. There were a lot of C4's built with FX3, ZR1 and otherwise. I imagine a lot of those have gone to "Corvette Heaven" by now and contributed their shocks to the mortal world of used Corvette parts. As you know, shocks are one of those items that most folks want new. However, given the Bilstein rebuilding service, used might be in demand by folks that need them and don't have any to send in for rebuilding.

                Just one thing I wonder about: original shocks were labeled "Delco-Bilstein". If the shocks are sent in for rebuilding, I would imagine that the original labels would be removed in the process. Most likely they'd be replaced by Bilstein labels. Still, I think rebuilding would be the way to go.

                It also appears that Bilstein does offer new replacements for the FX3 original shocks. The labels are, of course, different but the shocks otherwise appear like the originals. They sell for about $250/each.

                One doesn't want to need the FX3 actuators, though. That's a different story.

                  How do you use a ZR-1 on your farm?

                    it was used to haul young heifers about town and auto crossing. there is an article in an old Restorer mag (when terry mcmanmom was editor). mike

                      Good to know. I also heard ZR-1s make a great portable generator. Just jack up a rear tire and connect with a rubber hose.
