    C5 Headlight Motor

I have a 2001 C5 that needs a new headlight motor. I am trying to get one made in the USA. I ordered a motor at my local Chevy dealer and the AC Delco box says Made in Taiwan. Are there any sources for US made headlight motors? Barring that I assume I can rebuild it. The plastic gear has a couple of broken teeth. Thanks for any and all help.

Bob, have you tried the parts stores locally? I googled 01 Corvette headlight gear and it looks like Dorman products makes a gear replacement, Likely made in China.

I also found someone that makes a bronze gear for the C5 His name is Rodney Dickman, (262) 835-9575 there 43.00 for one 87.00 for two.

Thanks. Yes I looked locally. I may have to go with replacing the gear. So far all the aftermarket replacement motors are foreign made.

Yes AC Delco is just a rebox these days. its likely the original motor did not get much use over the years so I would not hesitate to just replaced the gear.

How do you know that your original motor was not made in Taiwan (or, elsewhere foreign)? MANY original parts for C5-C7 Corvettes are foreign-manufactured.

Also, if the OEM motor you got at the Chevrolet dealer is made in Taiwan, I don't expect it will be possible to find a USA-manufactured version from any supplier.

One tip, though: the motor you got from your Chevrolet dealer is likely GM #19207409, left side, or GM #19207410, right side. Those are NOT the original part numbers, though. The original part numbers were GM #16530235, left side, and GM #16530236, right side. Depending on which side you need, IF you could find an NOS example of either of these AND IF the original motors were made in the USA, then you might have what you seek.

Your original motor should have a white label on it. If so, the country of manufacture should be shown on it. What does it say?

I owned a 2002 C5 and I had to rebuild both headlight motors. It is very simple and you can get the few parts it takes at any of the Corvette stores. The original gears were nylon, but it is much better to replace them with brass gears. I seem to remember that you have to "break open" the motor where it was glued together. When I rebuilt mine, I bought a little kit with instructions. I bought the kit from Corvettes of Houston but they were available everywhere. At the time the motors (with the cheap nylon gears) were like 150 and the repair kit was abotu 20 bucks.

Bob, not hard to do. I replaced the plastic ones on my '98 several years ago and they have been trouble free. Go to Corvette Forum for on DIY instructions. Also Google for u tube video.

Thanks everyone. Will rebuild so I can keep the original equipment--where ever it was made! It is only original once.
