    67 Drive Shaft

Today, I was cleaning the Drive Shaft for my 67 SB 327/300. After cleaning the ring markings appeared. One appears to be orange and one just slightly inboard I cannot tell what the color is. These are on the rear end of the drive shaft. Also found what appears to be another partial ring on the front end about 8" from the yoke. In addition found a green daub painted near the rear end on the yoke. Think these are all good finds I hope.
What color should the rings be painted? The drive shaft cleaned up nice but is not as shinny as the half shafts. Plan to just replace the markings and reinstall drive shaft unless someone tells me how to give a nice polished look.

What you are describing is the paint markings used on all driveshafts when it was balanced. Looking at the blueprint and giving a short explanation; "Maximum runout of assembly at points A,B/,C to be .010 T'R..
Assembly must be within 3/16 in. oz. dynamic balance at front end and .010 in. oz. at rear when tested at 3500 R.P.M".
Paint no. 248-0679 yellow or equivalent opt. 248-59863 light green or equivalent marking to be at rear of tube next to nearest trunion and as close as possible to light side at rear of assembly when balanced.
As you can see, there is a reason for all markings!

      David, thanks for the info.
Agree, most searches here on the NCRS indicate orange and green rings.
Any thoughts what the "ring" 8 inches from the front could be?

Ralph, there are two rings as well on the rear most end of my 67 project I see as well. The color is obviously 50Yrs old but they do look like a yellow & a green. Clean it up & shoot a bit of flat clear over them to protect them from further wear.

What is interesting is that some pictures of the drive shaft stripes I have been looking at almost look like tape, not paint.
Is it possible the stripes were taped on and not painted on?

Ralph, tape wouldn't have survived the 1st rain storm the car drove through. Every original marking I've ever seen has always been a quick swipe of the paint brush.
