64 Engine Stamp VIN too high?

Hi. Looking at a 1964 FI Corvette, and seller sent me a photo of the engine pad stamping (attached.)

In my opinion, from the 1000s of pads that I have seen before, i do not remember ever seeing the VIN stamp this close to the head. I remember that the small block engine pads were stamped with the head on, versus the big block pads stamped with the head off. In this photo, it appears that with the VIN # in the gang, it would never fit with this head on.

Please let me know your opinions, and if you have ever seen an original stamping this high on the pad before. I do know that the owner cleaned the engine pad with Scotch Brite the morning of these photos.

    Thanks in advance,

    Steve

Your observation is good. There is no way that vin could have been stamped with the head on.

        Steven,

Here is the engine stamp pad from my 1964 Corvette equipped with a 327/300, stamped two days prior to the pictures you posted. It has been affirmed by Al Grenning to be the original stamp from the Flint assembly plant. I received a NTFP deduct at the 2014 NCRS Nat'l. Convention for the engine suffix "D" being raised.

I would agree with your observation.

I would also agree with the observation.

No issues from me with the pad number i.e. RD. I have lost of similar photos where GM made generic engines then assigned the code at the plant Same issue as a grind out.
