1966 427/390: The JM states that the PCV hose has a secondary bracket on the LH intake that holds the PCV hose, and that this bracket was installed prior to engine orange - therefore bolt and bracket are orange. I have not seen this before - and wonder why this bracket (on all 390hp cars) was installed prior to paint while the vacuum advance line clip (also on all 390HP cars in the same location) was installed post paint. The Dobbins book shows the bracket black phosphate, installed after paint, and states it in text too. I have seen many, what I believe to be original cars, with this bracket black phosphate - with an original intake bolt (with some orange remaining). My father and I are both leaning towards black phosphate, installed post paint. We called 3 very knowledgeable mechanical judges and have 2 agreeing with us, and 1 agreeing with the JM. One even pointed out that at the post paint engine assembly included removing 3-4 intake bolts: PCV hose bracket in question, Vac advance clip, 1-2 plug wire stanchions - all of which were to be reinstalled using the intake bolt removed, hence the tool marks on painted bolts. I am looking into seeing other experienced thoughts on this process. My thoughts are that the orange was a coating to "add some pop" but was primarily for protection of cast components - we know that plug stanchions, vac advance clips, plug heat shields, dipsticks, motor mounts were on all engines and not installed prior to paint, all of these items were coated in other materials and not subject to deterioration like the cast engine blocks and heads --- so why would a spring steel phosphate coated clip be installed prior? Logically I am correct, in theory, at least in my head! Thanks in advance.

Re: 1966 390HP PCV hose bracket question
I don't know what's right, but I have a '66 L36 I want to take through judging. It has a black phosphate bracket now, with an orange bolt, but I am afraid I will paint it orange to comply.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: 1966 390HP PCV hose bracket question
A simple thing I recall JohnZ stating one time regarding paint on engine assembly if the part was called out in the AIM with a part number then it was installed at finial assembly plant with NO engine paint. If just shown in the drawings then it was installed at the engine plant and thus painted with the engine- Top

Re: 1966 390HP PCV hose bracket question
guys this is real simple
that clip has a bolt that goes thru it, yes? Its one of the intake bolts, yes? Well...they shipped the engine from Tonawanda with ALL intake bolts, so what ever was there had to go on before, that is unless you want to run your car less untale bolts...
so that meant its orange just like the rest of the engine there's lots of pics of this too- Top
