3/32 X 1/2". Keep in mind that the length applies only to the pin portion, not including the head ("eyelet"). The end-to-end length is 7/8".

    The finish was natural steel.

      Thank you Joe.

That is what I thought. The reason I ask is the AIM shows a washer and cotter pin. up at the steering column end. The 3/32 works without any washer but not with the washer.

Any thoughts? Maybe the factory did not put on a washer. I have no reference as the cable was not connected when I purchased it.

      Thanks,

      Bill

Below are photos of both ends of an original installation on my 1969. These are just as they came from the factory---they've never been disturbed. By the way, I'm not so sure that the cotter pin mentioned in the AIM was the actual one used. These cotter pins appear to be zinc plated.

Very interesting indeed. The washers look like they may be zinc plated? I just finished soaking zinc pated washers and cotter pins in vinegar. Oh well.

I realize this is an old thread, but I just wanted to add a comment. The 3712496 washer called for in the AIM is a very thin washer only 1/32" thick. So it could be the washer thickness that is keeping the cotter pin from fitting. The thinnest I have been able to find is 3/64". I have not tried installing it yet so I don't know if it is going to work or not.

              Allen,

Do you know the OD and the ID of the washer? Even a guess?

                Gary,

My research indicates it's dimensions are 5/16" ID 11/16" OD 1/32" Thick with a cad finish.

The closest thing I found was thru Graingers. A Fabory 22UG53 Stainless Steel washer 5/16" ID 11/16" OD 3/64" Thick

                    Gary,

Thanks for the option. I am going to try the washer from Graingers and see if it works. One bad thing about AMK, you have to order $30 in parts at a time.

                    Thanks,
                    Allen

Your dimensions are correct but check that part number.

Good catch. Sorry about the wrong part number. The correct number is 3718496.
