    1963 engine compartment black out

The lip that runs around the top of the engine compartment is body color but is edge of that lip painted black?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

The inner edge is painted black just like the inner wheel wells.

Never seen the inner edge painted black on the engine compartment, only body color.

Pictures always help to know what everyone is talking about.

Yeah, maybe I don't visualize what he means. It would help with pictures. What I call the gutter around the hood opening was always painted body color.

Could be this? the edge of the hood surround gutter?

Yes, that is TFP as I have seen it. And correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the hood on and down when the blackout was sprayed from below in St. Louis bodies, and thus the overspray like this was typical in many places around the engine compartment.

Michael, believe there was a rubber mask which fit the sides and rear of the hood, resulting in a 'fuzzy' line of blackout on the under edge of the hood. Also, a mask was placed over the fenders and cowl area resulting in the body color being left on the edge gutter areas. Hood was up, front area was hit and miss on the hinges etc.

That sounds right, and according to John Hinckley's notes:

"After final bake, body was moved through a transfer area to the
Black-Out Spray Booth, where the engine compartment, hood
underside, cowl plenum cavities, and wheel wells were sprayed with

spray mask was used for the hood underside application, but no
masking was used along the front edge of the hood inner panel."

Here's another pic of a very original Corvette. You know the year!
