A friend of mine is trying to determine if his 2x4 air cleaner is original. The odd thing about it is the outer most edge has a ripple all the way around the outer edge. Should it have the ripple or be smooth?

Re: c1 2x4 air cleaner
If it's the early style sealed air cleaner someone may have unfolded the crimp to replace the filter element or restore the top. It would be difficult to unfold and refold the crimp without leaving marks or ripples due the way aluminum quickly work hardens.- Top

Re: c1 2x4 air cleaner
The ripples are all the way around the outer edge, looks like factory type ripples. The ripples/waves are spaced evenly. I've never seen one like it. It may be off a GTO or 442.- Top

Re: c1 2x4 air cleaner
check for the die draw lines on each vent. They should measure 3 1/4" and fairly evenly spaced. The 60 2 piece original that I have on my 59 has no ripples. Sound like a re-pro that someone was passing off as an original.- Top

Re: c1 2x4 air cleaner
The air cleaner in question is one I picked up from a local Corvette owner. The flame suppressor has the mesh showing pretty much all over, fins are all on the same side; center rivet, both top and bottom look like pics in 58-60 Corvette Restoration Handbook. Finish is dull, looks like other originals I have seen with the exception of the lower edge that seals up with the base. It is serrated(ripples). If I can figure out how to post a picture I will.- Top

Re: c1 2x4 air cleaner
I have never seen the ripple edges on these air cleaners. As for the flame arrestor, it should be a brownish color, but the photograph may not be accurate. As for the mesh showing, that could be from many years of backfires and dirt.- Top

Re: c1 2x4 air cleaner
if you look at the lower right side, where it appears the jute is unaffected by age and wear, the mesh is on top of jute. this is the opposite of the way original jute was made. this is typical of a lot of reproductions. the only way to get a truly original looking jute in a modern air cleaner is to purchase an original air cleaner in sad shape and remove the jute. the back side of the jute from the original air cleaner will look like new and show no mesh. there is no air cleaner made today that can match the original jute!- Top

Re: c1 2x4 air cleaner
Thanks to everyone who responded with their thoughts on my air cleaner. I took the flame suppressor and support off the top, trying to save the aluminum rivet. Here is what it looks like on the bottom side. There was fine sand in and under the suppressor. It looks like someone sandblasted the support, masked it off and painted it with black paint. The base is lightly pitted and has been repainted but you can still see the AC outline on it. The vertical lines on each side of the vents is three and a quarter inches apart. Thanks to Don and Brandon Thompson for posting the pictures for me- Top
