    66 oil pan

    Need Help Joe L
Replacing the oil pan gasket I have ordered and recived a fel pro os30061t one piece gasket. The problem is there is no hole in the front lower for the bolt for the timing house cover. Is this the wrong part or do I need to drill a hole. Forgot 427v 390 if it makes a differance

    Greg------

You will have to create the hole yourself. There is no 1 piece gasket I know of available with the hole. In fact, by now, most, if not all, 2 piece gasket sets probably don't have the hole. I don't think I'd use a drill to make the hole, though. I think you'd be better off using a cork borer or arbor punch to make the hole. You need to get the position of the hole exactly right before making the hole.

Thanks Joe for the info. I called Fel Pro this morning and you are correct they do not put the hole in the middle.

      Thanks again Greg

I'm sure the reason that the hole disappeared from the gaskets, 1 piece or 4 piece, is that this feature was only required for 1965-very early 1967 big blocks. The gasket makers probably figure there are not a whole lot of those left to be concerned about. If there are any, the installer can add the hole.

By the way, if you buy a 1965-74 Corvette replacement oil pan which is nearly identical to the original oil pans, you don't get the hole, either. In that case, one does need to use a drill to create the hole. That oil pan is still available from GM under GM #14091356.

Joe, That is what I guessed happened. I think the pan was replaced in the mid 90s and does still have the hole. When I got to the part about the bolt has to go back for judging this is where I lost the guy at Fel Pro. Also do you know what the correct side tag # is for a m21 66 l36. There is no listing for it in the judging guide. I have seen it as #3880855 and #3880853 any thoughts.
            Thanks as always Greg

The timing cover bolt is not just important for judging. 1965 to very early 1967 big blocks do not have the dowel pins for locating the timing cover. So, I consider that the bolt is necessary when installing an oil pan on these engines.

If your car has a 3.70:1 rear gear, the most likely part number for the transmission (i.e. the number embossed on the metal tag) is GM #3880853. However, GM #3879669 is a less likely possibility.

If your car has a 3.36:1 rear gear, then I expect the part number was GM #3879670.

If your car has a 3.08:1 rear gear, I don't know what the part number was.

I'm not 100% sure about the above numbers but I'm reasonably sure.
