'65 interior rear view mirror rattles

At certain RPM ranges, I have a very persistent rattle in the interior rear view mirror (standard mirror) of my '65 coupe. I believe the mirror to be original and I am pretty certain the glass is rattling in the chrome housing. I have searched the archives and I don't see how the glass is mounted within the frame. Is the frame crimped around the glass or ?? How can I tighten whatever it is that secures the glass within the frame?

    Thanks for your help!

I would find a thin clear super glue that will run in between the glass and the metal hsg. Wipe off excess so it doesn't show.

Jim, be careful on what you use to adhere as the backing on the mirror may get stained. what may work is some strip caulking, if there room to wedge between glass and housing. Home Depot sells some gray strip caulk that may blend in. Russ's idea may work ,but??

Russ thanks for the suggestion. Have you used this technique before?

Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to look at the joint between the glass and housing more carefully to see if there is sufficient room to use something more viscous like caulking. If not I may try the super glue idea.

I may have been lucky, no, I know I was, but my original mirror in my '64 actually fell out of the housing as I was going over some deep rumble strips on the road. It didn't break, but since it was out, I used a clear 3M adhesive on the back to glue it back in, setting it in the original glue globs that were behind it. Good luck, but I would be careful with Super Glue, I always end up gluing my fingers to whatever object I try to fix......

Thanks Mike... so the mirror is glued into the housing and it sounds like the glue is more or less located near interior portions of the mirror not out near the circumference of the mirror where it contacts the edge of the frame. I find that I am able to slip some card stock into the gap that exists in some locations around the circumference of my mirror. I am thinking I might try to force a bit of caulking in that small crack to see if that will dampen the rattle any.

No, I haven't had the need.

I didn't realize that this mirror is glued in like the outside rear view mirror is on later vettes. If that is the case the fix is simple. Let the mirror soak over night in lacquer thinner which will loosen the glue. Carefully remove the glass, clean both surfaces up and re-glue with silicone or like material.

Ended up fabricating a simple shim out of some black card stock and was able to insert it into the tiny gap between the glass and the housing. Nearly invisible and no more rattle.
