The master cylinder in my 84 Corvette needs rebuilding due to lack of use. When pulling it out of the garage, my foot went to the floor. The car only has 6000 miles on it (no lectures please). The wheel cylinders don't show any signs of leakage yet. The rear fluid chamber on the master was dry while the front chamber was full. I don't know where the fluid went unless it dripped on the floor but there was no sign of that. Could it have leaked into the vacuum canister? I'm also having a hard time getting one of the brake lines off. I used the proper 12 mm flare nut wrench but it rounded of the nut. Would heat around the nut help? Any recommendations regarding rebuilding the unit would be appreciated.

Re: '84 master cylinder
Perry, I would put some more fluid in and make sure there is not a leak somewhere, I sounds as though you lost a line/hose somewhere. a empty chamber would tell me that's what happen.Or back the nuts off the master and look behind the master and booster for a sign of fluid .New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: '84 master cylinder
I have searched all the normal suppliers, NAPA, Rockauto, etc. and have had no luck locating a master cylinder rebuild kit for my '84. They show it in their catalogues but when you try to order it they are out of stock. Does anyone have a source for an AC/Delco rebuild kit?- Top

Perry------
There is no AC/Delco rebuild kit for your application. There was a GM kit of GM #14067548 but it's discontinued and will likely be very difficult to find. Raybestos offers a kit under #MK2075. However, that may be the one that you're finding that no one is able to get at the present time. This is a PBR kit imported from Australia. Maybe the Australian supply lines are a problem.
There's another problem which you may be facing for which a rebuild kit is not going to do you any good. This involves bore corrosion/damage. I realize that this car has ultra low mileage but it's also been sitting for a long period of time. Corrosion is more related to time rather than mileage. A master cylinder bore has to be PERFECT or it will not hold the hydraulic pressures involved. In my opinion and experience, honing a master cylinder bore to "clean it up" (if even it can be "cleaned up") is a very bad idea. If the bore is in any way damaged, you need to have it sleeved. I don't know if anyone is currently sleeving these aluminum master cylinders. However, if anyone is, I'd suspect that Lonestar Caliper would be the ones or would be able to refer you to anyone else that is. Lonestar may also be able to supply a rebuild kit.
If the master cylinder bore is damaged and no one sleeves them, then you need to buy a replacement master cylinder. These are available as manufactured by PBR, the original manufacturer. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '84 master cylinder
Thanks Joe. My master cylinder has already been sent out to be re-sleeved and they are the ones that said they can't find a rebuild kit for it. I told them that I could get one only to find out that I can't I will contact Lonestar to see ii they have one. Couldn't I buy a new PBR unit and use the parts on my unit after it has been re-sleeved? I know that is the expensive way to do it.- Top

I believe you could but I could not guarantee it.
One thing you might do is to contact Raybestos and see what the status is of their kit.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
