    Recommendation for master cylinder resto

    Guys,

Looking for someone to restore my master cylinder. Anyone have any recommendations?

Also, I'm thinking of what to do with the MC cover and bales. I believe it is the original, but the chrome has flaked off and it's pretty rusty. I think I can reuse it but not sure if I should blast it or if I should send it to the plater to be stripped chemically. What do you think?

There are quite a few folks out there that can rebuild your master cylinder, Lonestar is one. It will almost certainly require brass or stainless steel sleeving. NEVER go with simply honing a master cylinder bore----it has to be either PERFECT, as is or it needs to be sleeved.

No original master cylinder cover or bales were EVER originally chromed. If any of yours are so-finished, it was done post-factory. Chemical stripping is the best but if the cover has suffered any corrosion-induced roughness or pitting, the refinished cover is not going to appear exactly as it originally did.

Thanks Joe. I will send it out to be stripped and if there is any damage I will see if I can source a replacement. Are there good quality repros out there?

Actually Joe, can you tell me if there is any date coding on the MC so I can check and ensure that this is the original one. If the cover and bales have been replaced/chromed it tells me someone may have changed out the MC itself. If it's not the original I can try and source a date coded one.

Mike, the C3 date codes are on the front line fitting boss, you may need to get some glasses or magnifier glass, print is very small. I believe the its a Julian date.

                Ed,

So for a Sept 69 build car what would I expect to see on the date? Up to 2-3 mo before that? up to 6 mo?

Mike, I really do not believe that logic plays a roll with dates in every case. I would say look at the date first, and see what you come up with ,even most judges will say a few months is okay.

                      Mike------

Below are some photos of a known original master cylinder from a known original, original owner 1969 Corvette with a body build date of September 13, 1969.

The Julian date of "9253" denotes September 10, 1969.

OK if they were never chromed, what is the original finish for the bales and covers?

Mike, Joe's pictures show the colors, the cover was a Gold Dichromate, bails had some kind of coating, but not sure if they were just natural, as they did not seem to rust easily.
