Anyone that can supply real good photos of the inside/outside screen mesh and the embossing is appreciated. ( for a AC A212CW)

This thread is a very good discussion with pictures. What is interesting is that it seems a number of the same part number, but later replacement filters, different configuration were selling on eBay for some large numbers.

Here's a very old AC 212CW. This one lacks any embossing or lettering on the filter ends but this one goes way back, maybe even well before 1969. The seller says that the filter's paper element is "not brown" as if that's a good thing. It's not. The slightly brownish color was there originally and was caused by the oil that wetted the paper element. This filter is so old that the oil has either drained off the filter (and into the box) or has volatilized. So, while it is an old filter, it's no longer original in appearance. Plus, the filter paper may be so deteriorated it would crumble.

My understanding of the correct version of the A212CW for C2 era cars is that it should have moulded in lettering as in the attached photo that I think came form jody Balch. I guess that's the difference between the rare correct one that sells on e-bay for $5,000 and the current one on eBay for $2,999.

I'm not so sure that VERY early examples of the 212CW filter had the embossing. The filter in the eBay item I linked does have the "soldered, diamond mesh" screen. I believe that ended somewhere around 1970-71 and was changed to "soldered, square mesh". So, the soldered, diamond mesh was probably used during the 1965-69 period. I know the 212CW used in about the 67-69 period had the embossment on the end. However, those used earlier might have lacked that feature.

The other thing I noted here is that the box the filter is in is a VERY old style box. I think it likely significantly pre-dates 1969, maybe back as far as 1965. One of the end flaps has a code which MIGHT indicate a 1969 printing date but it might also mean something completely different.

The one on ebay appears to have a vertical overlap which differs from the originals that I have seen plus I can see that the white silk instructions have worn off or had been removed.

I didn't see the photo before that shows the trace of the instructions, but it's pretty obvious. Now I see the listing says: "This listing was ended by the seller because there was an error in the listing." I'd love to know what that really means.

Looking at it again, I do see a very faint trace of lettering in one of the photos. However, it does not look like any of the script seen in later silk-screened examples.

Joe,

The faint lettering does make one a wee bit suspicious that someone was trying to make it look like the earlier, non-silk screen variety.

The prices for some of a212CW filers on e-bay are amazing: $999 for one that lists cars up thru 1979 on the box. I think those sellers are just hoping to find that one buyer with money to burn.
