C2 A/C duct clamp and bolt

On the right hand side duct of factory A/C cars there is a clamp that holds the two ends of the plastic ducts together. The clamp has a screw/bolt that is approx 1 1/4" long that holds the clamp together. Is that screw/bolt supposed to then attach to anything else i.e. the z bar or something? The screw only needs to be 3/8" to hold the clamp together. The extra length seems to dictate it goes into something to support the ducting, as without support the center section tends to sags down. For those with factory A/C, thanks for looking. Mine is a '67 but I believe all C2 were the same.

    Leif -

I think that screw is longer just to make it easier to assemble the clamp to the ducts. The position of the screw in the clamp won't allow it to attach to anything. Just looked at my factory A/C '66 - it has the same long screw as you described. It goes up between the Z bar and the air duct.

As to the sagging issue - I have found that installing some foam insulation inside the clamp helps to hold it in place - and it's invisible when the clamp is installed.

      Bob,
Thank you for taking the time to look at yours, as well as the foam suggestion. Happy Holidays!!

At Bloomington one June or July (?) (when it actually was in Bloomington) - JTPiper had that AC only duct clamp for sale. This was a new genuine GM clamp – GM part tag & all. It included an installed gray polyfoam seal 1/ 2” thick. I doubt JT added that seal as it was glued inside the clamp. In my experience it is a factory part. Some vendors just do not know about it; probably because they never had a AC model apart. It is installed in my 67 AC model and it does not appear to sag. That screw is very loooooong, as described. When you study your craft ....

          Geoff,
Is that polyfoam seal around the full interior circumference of the clamp? And, thank you for your insight (and all your fantastic products).

yes - one continuous strip around inner perimeter of the clamp - same width as the clamp - nestled neatly between the rolled over edges of the clamp
            Thank You
