I want my Corvette friends to be aware of what I think is a scam supported by EBAY. I sold a part to a person in CA. and he claimed "not original" and put it in dispute. Of course EBAY sided with the buyer as they almost always do. He was to send the part back and get a refund plus return shipping refund once I had the part back. Guess what No part was returned and EBAY took money from me and gave him a refund ++ so I am out the part and return shipping. Just be careful out there !!!! Tis the season for thieves and elves alike.

Re: EBAy Scam Warning
That's starting to happen more and more Jim. One of the (many) reasons I'll never sell anything on ebay. I don't know if this will help, but give them a call and tell them what happened.

Re: EBay Scam Warning
Something very similar happened to me. I advertised a coil that was a new replacement coil and not an NOS coil. The buyer claimed that I represented it as an NOS coil and eBay sided with the buyer. The description of the non NOS coil was in the header and the description area, plus there was an emphasis on it not being NOS . I sent a letter to the CEO of eBay and received some resolution; however, a negative feedback stayed on for a year. Even if you complain about a buyer: nothing happens and the complaint goes into an empty hole. If you have a heavy item like a starter; losing the shipping fees can add up. Also, I do not understand why eBay gets 10% of the shipping cost. This seems a bit like extortion!

Re: EBay Scam Warning
Mark, E-Bay originally didn't charge the 10% of the shipping cost but had to change that policy because many sellers were abusing it. They would sell a $100 item for $1.00 and charge $99 shipping making E-Bay's commission only 10 cents.- Top

I can't imagine how many times that could be pulled off before the seller was toast.

Re: EBay Scam Warning
How would feedback factor into this? As a buyer, if you paid $100 for a $100 item, why would you care how it was divided between selling price and shipping? I've sold hundreds of items on E-Bay and only once had a non-paying bidder. No big deal. I agree their fees are crazy high but where else can you get that kind of exposure on an item you want to sell?- Top

Re: EBay Scam Warning
If I see an item listed by a seller with multiple negative feedbacks I don't buy.
I doubt many would roll-over to pay 99 dollars to ship a one buck part or buy the item unless it was way undervalued at the $100.
Maybe I'm alone in thinking this way but I don't think a seller would last long doing that.

Re: EBay Scam Warning
Bob, you missed the point of my post. For example, if you wanted to buy an item that you're willing to pay $100 shipped to your door, why would you leave negative feedback to a seller that sold it for $1 & $99 shipping? The price you paid would still be what you wanted to pay for that item.
On a side note, these horror stories have me thinking. I just sold a carb. core for close to $1000 and had zero problems but I guess the possibility of a scam is possible. Before I ship, I look at the buyers feedback and then decide whether I need signature conformation.- Top

Re: EBay Scam Warning
Jim: Besides negative feedback one is also rated on the shipping star. This would be a far better alternative than taking a cut out of shipping. As you ship heavier items the fees add up. Over the years eBay has more and more creative ways to nick the sellers!- Top

Re: EBay Scam Warning
I have an engine block to sell and had thought about using e-Bay until seeing this thread. If the part is sold through Driveline, would a seller take a check and wait for the funds to clear? Is there a better way to protect both the buyer and seller for the payment?

Ken
Seller and buyer could contact each other by phone and make their own payment arrangements outside ebay. Many have phone numbers in the ad so I call direct and pay them direct. And as a plus get it cheaper avoiding e bay fee. And also shipping is actual cost.
Today as a seller I have no real use for e bay and it's rip offs as seen here.Last edited by Gene M.; December 1, 2016, 02:41 PM.- Top

Re: EBay Scam Warning
Sorry this is getting off topic and non-technical...but...
I've noticed as a buyer that often vendors sell things cheaper on eBay then they do on their own websites or calling them directly. Makes zero sense to me based on the discussion here about excessive eBay fees.- Top

Re: EBAy Scam Warning
Listing as "No return" will not matter. eBay will guarantee the buyer a refund regardless, they make a point of stating that. Shipping by USPS will make no difference either. The buyer will just say the part was not as described.
ebay used to make the buyer send the item back with a tracking number and would not refund without it. However, if the buyer wants to rip you off even this doesn't help as they can send back an empty box with a tracking number......
The only way to combat it is to sell to buyers with over 100 feedback or set some type of buyer preferences.
I've been selling on eBay since 1998, had a few screwballs but the vast majority turned out good with over 4000 transactions.- Top
