    Body Rivet size?

Hi. I'm wondering what size the body rivets size is, specifically for the rear drip edge tabs (between the body and rear bumpers) and the trunk and deck lid hinge mount assembly for a 59. See pictures for placement. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Jill,
I am not sure of the rivet sizes but they are in places which make it difficult to set them.
I got the right size's and threaded the shanks and installed using washers and nuts.
    Not NCRS but functional.

1 Look in AIM for GM part number
2 Plug # into googul (sic) as such: GM xxxxxx - don't forget the GM in the search

        Re: Body Rivet size?

Delicate area at the bumper location. I use a round head soft aluminum rivet, 3/16" diameter, which I believe matches the originals. I get the 9/16" lengths and cut them where needed.

I have actually used a air hammer at a very low air pressure setting to set them at that area. This car had prior damage and Pop rivets. After repairs I was nervous about rivets but was fine. You just have to ensure the backer bar on the rivet head is a good solid hold.

I don't recall the lid/trunk sizes off hand, but it may be the same as I seem to recall a round head there too. The AIM part # suggestion will confirm. The last photo above may have a view.

Here, just found another....right side shows it.

Thanks for your responses Bruce, Geoff and Rich. I really appreciate your help getting me on the right track with my little dilemma. I am sooooo close to applying epoxy sealer on the car before painting the body (after it off-gases, of course). It is really exciting, especially working on the car for nearly 4 years!!! Thanks again! ☺

My 59 rear valance was hit prior to me owning the car and was put back together with all sorts of screws and pop rivets. Once everything was cleaned off during the restoration I purchased Aluminum rivets from Corvette Central. I wan;t sure which would work so I bought a package of each size. Check out their parts # 181305 181306 and 181307. I think I used the 306 rivets.

                Hi Rich.

Is there any way you can measure how high the hole is for the rear reflector? If you would measure from the top crown of the drip edge next to the body (where the exhaust pipe exits) and go up, that would be great. (See picture with arrow indicators for reference.)

The Technical Guide and Judging Manual says the placement is on the crown in the rear.

Also, if you can provide the hole size, I would appreciate it. I don't have any reflectors and they're on back order until February. Thanks so much.

Jill, That car is gone, but I'll get a measurement from my own '59 in a bit......Rich

ps The AIM may show the hole size.

Hi Jill, Sorry I forgot that. I just wrote myself a penciled note and will get it for you today.

                        Re: Body Rivet size?

Jill, I measured 1 3/4" from the top of the fiberglass flange to the bottom of the chrome bezel where it's against the body, on both sides.

Hole size unknown as I didn't remove them, but likely a tad bigger than the stud size. Aim Section 12 shows the reflectors but no hole size or placement measurement.

                          Re: Body Rivet size?

Thanks so much. Good news since I last posted...my reflectors will be here Monday (they came off of back order quite a bit earlier than expected). I'll be able to tell the hole size after I receive them. I really appreciate you providing me the measurement from the drip edge going up so I can place them correctly. The fiberglass on the entire rear end of the car had to be redone because of some mods from the previous owner that were never finished. That meant all of my hole placements for things such as my reflectors were gone. One of the mods included the antenna hole on the drivers side being fiberglassed over and a new hole drilled on the passenger side. It's now back on the drivers side with the passenger side re-fiberglassed. I feel like I've become an expert on fiberglass work / repairs with all the work I've had to do. In the end, I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole process and hope I can pass on my trials and tribulations with others as needed.

Thanks again for all of your help. It is much appreciated.

Jill, Glad it helped. I think the stud size is #10 so the hole should be around that. Did you get the complete kit with mount hardware and special right angle backup piece? You need that due to the angle of the body on the inside before the washer and nut.
