I am putting together the 'correct' keys for a 1969 Corvette. The ignition key lock has 2J09 which is correct for a 1969. The spare tire tub and rear storage compartment each has B1 on each lock. Is this the correct code for this key? Thanks for any input. Steve

Re: 1969 Spare Tire Tub and Rear Storage Compartment Key
Steve,
The B1 is a mold number for the tire lock and the storage compartment lock. For those locks for '69 you need a oval bow (that part of the key you grab onto) key with the H keyway, indicated by an H stamped into the blade of the key.
Your ignition key for '69 is a E keyway key with an E stamped into the blade and with a rectangular bow.

Steve,
Here's a photo of an H keyway key blank that is correct for '69.

The key code for your secondary key should be xLxx, or xMxx, where x are any digits from 0 to 9.

Re: 1969 Spare Tire Tub and Rear Storage Compartment Key
Gary,
Thanks for the response and information. I have the correct keys. My follow-up question is where do I look for the key code on the rear compartment lock and the spare tire lock? The rear compartment lock has the bezel that is crimped completely around the lock body and I would assume that it is original. I have looked all over the spare tire lock and can not see any key code. Any information on where to look for the key code would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Again, Steve- Top

Re: 1969 Spare Tire Tub and Rear Storage Compartment Key
Steve,
Based on my observations only about 5% of C2 tire locks have the key code stamped into the lock core. I've never seen the key code stamped into a lock for '68 or newer.
Again for C2, all original glove box lock cylinders have the key code stamped either into the side or end of the push button, but I don't know if that continued into the C3 era. If the code is there, you'll have to remove the push button from your rear compartment lock and take a look.

Re: 1969 Spare Tire Tub and Rear Storage Compartment Key
Gary, If the E key is ignition, doesn't the F key generally get used for the other lock cylinders? that's what I am use to seeing generally.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 1969 Spare Tire Tub and Rear Storage Compartment Key
The so-called letter keys which began in '67 are:
67: A & B
68: C & D
69: E & H
70: J & K
71 onward: repeat above sequence by year
The letters F, G, and I were never used, for reasons that I don't know.
