Window Shattered
My contribution to problems: The passenger side window on my permanent trailer queen shattered all by itself. Just sitting there like it has for years inside the locked car trailer in the locked garage, thru all manner of hot/cold weather, and now it decides the factory window should be replaced. The driver side is lowered by half inch so the interior breathes with the weather; for years I didn't even do that, it was tight as a drum and no problems. I have read that it has happened to a few others on occasion, so its not impossible. Now to search for date-coded correct glass.

You'll be looking for a GM #347998. However, finding an NOS example of that part with a date code that works for your car is going to be well-nigh impossible. I think your best bet is going to be looking for a used example from a 1978 built about the same time as yours.In Appreciation of John Hinckley -

I found a couple of sources already. Thanks for the part number Joe. That's one thing that can't be patched/glued back together, etc. Pop, and its gone. At least it was judged so I have the date code filed.78 white L82 M21Comment

I had the same thing happen to the rear window of my 78...shattered while sitting in the garage. The two upper corners fell out. I contacted John Hinckley who stated, as you discovered, that over the years, windows shatter spontaneously not really understood. It typically happens when they are new rather than forty years later.
I was fortunate to track down a correct date coded rear window that was salvaged.Tom Russo

Wonder if the glass shatters because of something in the glass itself or is there some unknown stress
being applied to it from it's mountings and how the car is sitting?? LarryLarry

Interesting phenomena, it seems that latent manufacturing defects in the tempered glass can become active through many heating and cooling cycles. The consensus seems to be when this happens that the original defect over time expands to the point of failure. It's a bummer when it happens to an original glass for sure.Comment
