I need a "928" distributor for a 69 L71 and I am unsure how to positively identify a 928 TI distributor. I believe the main shafts are all different between distributors, so how do you identify the different main shafts?

For all practical purposes, it's not possible to positively identify a GM #1111928 distributor. While it's true that many different main shafts were used for Corvette distributors with the primary differences being TI/non-TI and the autocam brazed to the top, the shaft used for the 1111928 distributor was NOT unique to that distributor. It was used for, at least, 2 other distributor part numbers.
So, to positively identify a GM #1111928 distributor one would have to positively identify not only the main shaft but also the springs, weights, pole piece, and other internal parts of the distributor. Identifying most of these would be nearly impossible since few are stamped with part or other identifying numbers. The autocam brazed to the top of the mainshaft does have an identifying number but I don't know what it is for the 1111928 distributor and, like I mentioned, it was used for at least 2 other distributor part numbers.
Remember, even if a distributor has an identifying band with a certain part number on it, that does not positively identify a distributor as these bands are easily changed.
Now, the good news is that a competent distributor specialist can create a distributor with the exact characteristics of the 1111928 distributor from just about any other TI distributor. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
