The Corvettes mainly mid years have been plagued with concerns of bogus ID plates. The switching of real tags is even more difficult to uncover as the forgers get better at covering up the deceit. There has been revisions in the quality of the bogus tags but even of late I see easy to detect flaws. As we share the sightings it is apparent the forgers read here and make revisions to their dirty work. I wonder if others such as Tri Five Chevy, baby birds and early Mustang's & Camaro's have ID tag issues as the Mid year Corvettes experience.

And the ultra expensive European cars are even worse. Old Porsches, Ferraris, etc.
That is a real mess.
I guess we should consider ourselves fortunate.
Back in 1988 or so, I was talking with a guy at Bloomington that had a real nice 67 435 car. This was when prices were "up there" and guys were flying into the meet in helicopters with briefcases full of cash to buy (i.e. the speculators were running rampant in the Corvette community).
I complemented this guy on his car. He replied "It is just junk with value". He was a big time player in the classic Ferrari (think seven figures), and got into the Corvettes when this market exploded.
Haven't seen him since then.- Top

Re: Trim/VIN tag issues
I never understood what the big deal was. A trim tag only designates Ext color, Int color and material. It does not designate engine, transmission etc. Yeah I know, a black car with red interior is more desirable than a white car with black interior. You can get a top flight with a resto engine, different transmission and other non original parts but god forbid you should have a repro trim tag -- you will be deemed a leper.- Top

Auctions America had a dirty old 1957 barn find at the Hilton Head Concours Saturday auction. Yikes!- Top

Re: Trim/VIN tag issues
As I understand it, T Bird folks don't think it's a big deal to paint a car different color from what it came with or change interior colors or get a trim tag to correspond to changes. Different from us NCRS people. Changing the VIN would be different, though, illegal isn't it?- Top

Re: Trim/VIN tag issues
I believe the VIN # was also on the trim tag like my 63 Ford along with the engine, rear end & tranny code. The VIN plate was welded on the cowl on the drip rail.65 350 TI CONV 67 J56 435 CONV,67,390/AIR CONV,70 454/air CONV,

Re: Trim/VIN tag issues
Right. On early T Birds, VIN, color, tranny codes all on one plate. Saw add for getting a new plate made up with correct VIN but as you like for different color ,if you changed color, etc. Talking just T birds.- Top

It's feasible to Top Flight with a color change, why would it ever be necessary to add a fake trim tag?- Top

Re: Trim/VIN tag issues
Yes, it is possible however highly unlikely. Since it is possible -- why even bother to make such an issue over the trim tag. One might install a reproduction trim tag if their car, for whatever reason, did not have one. Again, the only thing the tag really indicates is ext color and int color and material. Yes, one could change the ECL codes as well, however the big thing is color. An original trim tag will not validate a BB car that was originally a SB if that is the major concern- Top
