I know you pack them in heavy grease but that's not even working. Every time I drop the shaft in the housing the tip always hits the bearings and upsets them. Any tips.

Yes, I may have the number of roller bearings wrong, just a guess. It's the roller bearings that fit inside the pilot bore and you use grease to hold them In place on the side of the bore when trans gears goes in.- Top

Cut a piece of wooden dowel that is the same diameter as the countershaft, to the same length as the countergear. Install the bearings in the countergear with the dowel holding them in place. Put the countergear in the transmission, and push the dowel out with the countershaft. The dowel will hold the the bearings in place as the countershaft slides into the transmission case and pushes the dowel out. The tailshaft housing will have to be off so the dowel can come out the back end of the transmission. It was about 30+ years ago that I had the same issue with a Muncie. Hope this is what you were referring to and that you have success in getting your transmission back together. Those bearings can be a pain even with a heavy wheel bearing grease.

Edward,
Yes, Vaseline is the choice of those who build transmissions for fun and profit. The Vaseline will melt with heat and be replaced with trans oil. Some people say the heavy grease will not be replaced as the transmission heats up.
Built them for years with axle grease and no complaints BUT it could happen any day.

This is essentially how GM recommended it be done and how I do it. For Muncie transmissions there was actually a Kent-Moore GM tool for use as the dummy shaft. It was J-22246. The tool for T-10's was J-24658.Last edited by Joe L.; November 16, 2016, 05:58 PM.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Steve
The Dr goo stuff looks like a thick wax more then a gel. 5speeeds.com has some video on their site showing it in use. I pack the countershaft rollers complete, slide through the counter shaft and they are neatly packed. The main to input cage rollers I just pack and they don't move. Once the oil in the trans gets hot it will dissolve the goo and there are no after affects that I have seen. I have been using it the past 10-12 years now sure when it actually came out?- Top
