    1966 Coupe Door assembly questions

I'm having some issues with getting my vent window assembly to fit correctly. This is a coupe.

The first issue is mostly a question. I have posted picture of both the left and right door without the vent window assembly in either door. I'm trying to figure out what size screw (sheet metal type I believe) that goes through a pocket in the inside door fiberglass and through the vent window frame then into a hole in the outer door.

Both of the pockets need some repair, but with that done, how does it all go together?

A good picture of an assembled vent window frame in this area would be very helpful.

I believe it is a #10 screw. Paragon sells (pictured below) a set that included two sheet metal screws, washers, and flat nuts (spring steel type). However, it sure looks to me like the Paragon sheet metal screws are not long enough.

Assuming the assembly uses a #10 sheet metal screw, a flat washer and then the flat nut on the outside of the outer door, by measurement it will take a 1 1/4" or longer screw. With the vent window assembly installed, bolted and screwed in all location except the one in question, there is a gap between the fiberglass pocket and the vent window frame. It looks to me if I were to tighten that screw until the fiberglass if tight against the vent window frame, the fiberglass would likely crack completely as there is at least a 1/4" gap.

Hopefully my explanation makes a little sense.

    Looking for some help please.

    Don,

The screw you need is 1.75 inches long with a washer. It is a round head philips.

The Paragon is a definite too short.

Don, that is a very common problem for both coupe & roadster. You are correct in that pulling the gap tight puts a lot of force on that small fiberglas area. You can make a reinforcement from one-eighth inch bar stock & form it to have about 2inch wings on each side to spread the force over a much larger area. Drill the appropriate hole for the screw & you can safetly tighten the gap. I had to do exactly that . This will not interfere with the panel installation. You will need to make the glass repair first. This may require a slightly longer screw...can't remember that detail.

        Thanks Joe and Ralph.

Do either of you know if this is a #10 screw? Both of mine were missing when I disassembled it.

Here's a picture of the passenger size dummied up. I'll do some fiberglass repair and then close the gap with something. I've go some 1/8" aluminum flat stock somewhere.

        Thanks again,

Not sure about the screw size.... Lowes or Home Depot have the bad stock...

            Don,

That is the correct screw BUT the wrong length.

I believe the sheet metal type screw is a hex head. This is typically what I see when I take them apart. Of course, when the door panel is installed, it's invisible.

This is how I usually repair that delicate area of fiberglass as most are broken when I take the door panels off to access and remove the vent windows. Someone tried some gray goo mixture of something so I dug it out and used heavy duty mat and resin to restrengthen the area.

                Rich,

It may be a hex head in the later C-2's but it's a philips head in the earlier cars. Done too many of them to miss those screws.

                  The screw is #9418959 in group 8.977. It's a pan head phillips 1/4 x 14 x 3/4 zinc plated. The washer is #120392 9/32 id x 5/8 od x 5/64 thick zinc plated

Here's four screws that I have removed from C-2's and plated.

I think you will find them a little longer than 3/4".

That's exactly what I've found on every one of the many I've restored.

I've seen the hex on the 1967 doors. Thanks JR.
