Early 1963 Glove Compartment Lock Assembly????????????

'63 Gurus - I'm looking for information on the "plating" on the 63E glove compartment lock case & the retainer? The 63-64 TIM&JG indicates that the lock assembly is "secured to the backside with a cadmium/zinc retainer & a single chrome Phillips screw" & the 63-64 TIM&JG indicates that the 63M/L with the larger face bezel is "secured on the back side of the door with a "U" shaped chrome plated retainer & a single chrome Phillips screw.

So, are the 63E glove compartment lock cases & retainers not chrome plated as the original glove compartment lock cases & retainers on the '66 & '67 Corvettes (at least the ones on my cars are) & attached with the chrome plated Phillips screw.

    Thanks for your input. Pete

Bob, if I understand your question correctly, I have one key for everything. Pete is asking about the shape of the glove box lock and bezel, early vs late.

Harry, I don't know 63s but are you sure you stated it right with 1st design on the right? (RH is the one used for the rest of the C2s)

I think the actual hole for the lock is the same for early and late either will fit in the same opening.

Yes, the early 63 lock looks like the 64 to 67 lock.

The locks and doors are not interchangeable. I called Trim Parts on this and they were aware of the difference, They said they could modify the 63 door they sell for an additional $75 to accommodate the early lock

The real early 63 glove box door is all by itself. Naturally. The hole for the lock is different. The inside of the door has a very rough textured fiber looking plastic.
My 63 the LWC is a March 3rd car. But the glove box door is from a Sept 62 Grady Davis Gulf Research car once owned by a local doctor. Dr. Donald Blatchley. That's how I started out in this game folks. Was on the original pit crew with Doc. When he sold the car his had mechanic had truck loads of parts that did not go with the car. I got most of the mechanical parts and a well know Doc here got a lot of the other parts.
In 1963 I bought two 63's. One day Tim Grakiak or his brother gave me a present for the car. The glove box door from the Grady car. Looked brand new as was taken off immediately when Grady Davis bought the car. First time my car was judged at Marlborough a well known judgfed with blond hair and shorts said I had a repro glove box door as he had never seen one like mine.
Peter. I recall the door lock opening might have been altered to use the later lock style. I always had a problem with this door/lock. Door came with the black phosphate catch. If you installed a chrome catch the door would easily pop open. When the car was re-restored the fix was to use washers betwen the catch and the framework. Bubba work except the door never popped open again.
Haven't seen the original lock assembly from this early door in an eon. Buried around here. John D.
