You should join a local Chapter. Chapters are listed on the website Contacts page:

Gary's three suggestions are spot on and I would add the following considerations.

By joining a local chapter, you'll find members that can help with initial observations of your 78 and sources that can explain the process. This should be your first step.

The 78 tech manual is much more informative in terms of the detail related directly to your 78 than the Judging Reference Guide. The Judging Reference Guide is quite technical but includes descriptions and guidance for the various award programs...such as Bowtie, or as you describe survivor.

Then, of course, there is this forum, as you have learned that can help with questions when all else fails!

Welcome to the forum.

Good advice in the previous posts. Before you do ANYTHING, read Section 9 of the Judging Reference Manual (starts on page 45). Bowtie (survivor is a Bloomington Gold term) is NOT a cleaning contest. You need to be careful as cleaning can destroy original paper tags, crayon marks, ink stamps, etc.

Local chapter judging or experienced judges can give you an assessment.
