C6 - iPhone overrides electrical systems

Am asking this question on behalf of a friend that owns a 2007 C6. He is the first and only owner of the car. It is equipped with the standard engine and manual transmission, it is not a heavily optioned car. It has never been in an accident and he has not previously experienced any type of electrical problems. The car is not equipped with any type of factory installed or aftermarket Bluetooth devices or receiver.

If he inserts a charging cord

Keep the car away from a full moon, and black cats and put a cross and some garlic hanging from the rear view mirror.

Start with the dealer. Ask him about TSB 08-08-47-001.

You may be on to something - my friend had the mirror removed when he took delivery of the car and he only drives it between sunset and just before sunrise.

I have had several different iPhones (daughter's & mine & wife's -- all three different versions) plugged into my 2008 with no issues. Sometimes one phone and other times two phones. I have a fair number of options on the Z06, if that makes a difference. My daughter uses AT&T; the wife and I Verizon. The electronics in these newer cars is a black-hole mystery to me, and I always have my cell phone handy to call for help, but needed to only once due to a tire issue. I see numerous reports on Corvette Forum of issues with cell phones plugged into the car, but none that I recall exactly like you are reporting. I would suggest your friend just goes with the flow and not worry. What will be; will be.

It's 2:30 in the morning, and I have no clue why I can't sleep tonight, but I have to tell you Gene, I just laughed so hard out loud, it woke up the dog, she started barking, jumped in front of the motion sensor in the other room and the house alarm went off.

It looks like that TSB and likely a reprogram of something the iPhone issue may be resolved.

As read more of Ed's link(nice find Ed), the Remote Control Door Lock Rcvr Module reprogram would fix that occasional ding-ding-ding when I get in my '07 coupe looking for the FOB even before I hit the Start button.

It would probably fix the horn beeping when I get out of the car and walk by the front bumper, but it would also require a trip to the dealer. Seeing as I avoid those like the plague, I'm not sure it will ever get reprogrammed.

Patrick, I agree, I don't like those trips either so I'll just live with it.

Is this charger an Apple charger or just a Verizon charger? The reason I ask is that typically the name brand chargers have circuitry built in to minimize the noise radiated (EMI) from the charger. You see those cheap chargers all the time, guess what the first parts are that get eliminated in order to get the price down? Yup, the interference filtering.

Since both of the oddities he experiences happen when the charger is plugged in I would strongly suspect that there is some level of EMI radiating from the charger that is interfering with the car.

Most chargers employ a switching supply internally and when the switching supplies are not filtered properly by design, they turn into very efficient noise makers.

                    Tom

Oh, and that cord that runs from the charger to the phone becomes a very nice antenna for the EMI to radiate from.

Tom- It is definitely not an Apple product - the charger is produced or marketed by Verizon, I've asked for the product specifics - you may be on to something here. Thanks for weighing in.

My friend tells me that he purchased the charger in a Verizon store. It is a 12 watt / 2.4 amp STRIKEDRIVE car charger and is supposed to have been made for iPhones - the words "Apple Lightning" were on the package. This product was made in China for SCOSCHE industries out of Oxnard CA.

By the way, my friend is grateful and overwhelmed by the responses from NCRS members - with the knowledge gained he says he will just engage the charger after the car is running and disengage it before he shuts the car down.

It appears that Apple sells the Belkin units for car chargers:

I'd probably just buy a different charger.
