    3850950 License plate attaching kit

I've check all my references and can't find anything on this part number, but going by the series (38xxxxxx) they appear to be from the early to mid 1960's. Anyone have any other info on these?

    Thanks

The only 3850950 license plate attaching kit I have ever seen was in the glove box of a 65. It was there when he bought the car from the dealer. And he has passed so I don't know where the 65 is now.

I don't have any info myself, but an Ebay search on that part number yielded the following:

Ouch! If that part number is that expensive, I'm gonna have some made in Tiawan!

GM # 3850950 was not sold over the counter according to my 1963, 1967, or 1971 Dealer Parts and Accessories Price Schedules. I'm sure that the Ebay seller will sell this kit as soon as the rocket ship from Pluto arrives.

Thanks guys. I saw that ebay auction too (although it's not why I asked the question).

License plate screws are nothing special because the car is a Corvette. All the Chevy line used the same type or slotted large diameter truss head screws. They all rusted just as fast being in the elements.

It's a late 1964 to early 1965 released part number. However, as Dave mentions, it was never a SERVICE-available part number. Kits like this, especially with the kind of package seen in the eBay item, are virtually never sold in SERVICE. In SERVICE, one buys whatever components of the kit one needs as separate parts. Purchased at the same period as the kit was used, the components purchased separately will almost always be absolutely identical to those included in the kit.

This kit was likely used across all Chevrolet car models and, perhaps, even other GM car lines. Just because it has a Chevrolet part number does not mean it was used only on Chevrolets. Lots of Chevrolet part-numbered parts were used on other GM car lines.

There's an entire section in the AIM which covers small parts; for 64AIM its Section 14 sheet A3.00.
You will find a line item "License Plate Attachment Unit" as opposed to the Frame however it's pn 3858189, but a NPC-292 is also referenced.
The instructions state "place in instrument panel compartment" So your number be that before a new number was issued.

This post caught my attention because I have a "License Plate attaching Parts" white package with Unit # 336580. I don't remember where I got this or i could have back in my GM days. I believe from the feel of the parts they are large slotted screws with plastic inserts.

Assuming the 336580 is a GM part number, that would have been released about 1973 or 1974. However, I don't think it was ever originally included with a Corvette.
